Regular readers of this column would know that TI is not a PGA Tour player although when I get those few great shots in a row know that the dream is not over yet!
Regular readers of this column would know that TI is not a PGA Tour player although when I get those few great shots in a row know that the dream is not over yet!
TI has a number of good friends in the field this week so I have some knowledge of the course but no real knowledge (unlike most weeks) of who is in form and the general locker room/practice fairway chat that gives me some insight into who will be a chance.
Therefore TI has decided to go with ‘gut feel’ this week rather than try and study to find a winner. TI also likes to provide some value although at the U.S. Open you need to be one of the best in the world to come away with the trophy.
In no particular order…
Rickie Fowler – Ladbrokes: $17
TI wouldn’t be one to dress like this young cat but believes he has the game to win a Major and surely must be getting close. Has proven he has the game to be there late on Sunday and arguably the best putter in the game, he may just get it done this week.
Justin Rose – Ladbrokes: $13
Rarely has his name been mentioned with the favourites but the smart golf fans would know this guy is among the best. He is a past champion, a quality ball striker and his last six months have been equal to any player in the game.
Justin Thomas – Ladbrokes: $15
He shot a course record in last year’s U.S. Open but didn’t finish the job. Now that he has won a Major championship he should be more relaxed coming into this week. Just lost his World Number 1 ranking last week so I guess he will be motivated to return to the top of the list. This guy is clearly a star and a player I’m sure Aussie golf fans would love to see up close! Make space for an ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia please JT!
Tiger Woods – Ladbrokes: $21
I can hear the gasps from here! The great man has showed really good signs this year. There must still be question marks over his driving off the tee and also whether he still really has it in the heat of battle but once a champion always a champion and TI never writes off a champion.
Rafa Cabrera Bello – Ladbrokes: $81
This guy also may be from left field but he drives the ball straight. If he can manage his nerves which will no doubt appear if in contention on the traditionally tough U.S. Open greens, this guy can come out on top.
TI believes all our top Aussies – Day, Leishman, Smith and Scott can hoist the trophy this week and is hoping by not tipping them one of them will be the champion!
Day and Scott are already Major champions who will have their game peaking for this event and Leishman and Smith have shown enough in these big events to suggest they have what it takes to win.
TI is confident of the Aussies chances and although unlikely believes that all 9 may just make the cut and what an achievement that would be.
TI is extremely patriotic but is especially pleased to see Bransdon, Scrivener and Herbert (there’s your mention Lucas;) ) make their debuts this week.
