Michael Kim claimed the final Open spot on offer with a record eight-shot victory at TPC Deere Run, Jones dropping nine places with a final round of 1-over 72 to finish in a tie for 12th.
It was a bright start for the New South Welshman who birdied the opening hole but gave it back two holes later and then a double bogey at the par-3 7th – where he left a chip shot from the left rough short of the putting surface – ended any hopes of a Sunday charge.
Secure in The Open Championship courtesy of his runner-up finish at last year’s Emirates Australian Open, Jones now heads to Scotland hoping to improve on his best previous result at The Open, a tie for 30th at St Andrews in 2015.
Former John Deere Classic champion John Senden posted his best result on the PGA Tour since the Shriners Hospital for Children Open last June with a T34 finish highlighted by a round of 66 in the second round and weekend rounds of 67-68 for a total of 11-under.
Stuart Appleby was the only other Australian to make the cut, his final round of 67 moving him up to a tie for 50th.
