Young guns Brett Coletta and Ryan Ruffels will have their games on display for the second time in a month on the PGA TOUR after each received an invitation to play this week’s Travelers Championship.
The pair join nine other Australians in the field in Connecticut, Coletta after a particularly impressive outing at The Memorial Tournament three weeks ago.
A T25 finish by the reigning Queensland Open champion in just his second appearance in the U.S. made an impression on many and the 20-year-old will be looking for a repeat this week as he chases the ultimate goal of a ticket to play the world’s top circuit.
Ruffels also teed up in Ohio though had less than his best game and missed the cut. However, the talented teenager has since recorded his second runner-up finish of the year on the Latin America Tour and with his game back on track a repeat of that Memorial performance seems unlikely.
While Coletta and Ruffels will be hoping to make the most of this week’s opportunity there is much to play for among the other Australians in this week’s field, particularly Jason Day whose play at the U.S. Open was cause for concern.
The former World Number One missed the cut at Erin Hills and has now slipped to fourth in the Official World Golf Ranking after being overtaken by joint runner-up Hideki Matsuyama.
It was a particularly disappointing result for Day who said after his Friday round that he felt his preparation had been as good as for any previous Major.
Poor driving was the main issue for the Queenslander in Wisconsin and he will no doubt have been hard at work on that part of his game since last Friday.
Redemption will be very much on his mind at TPC River Highlands where his two previous appearances have resulted in T27 (2008) and T18 (2014) finishes.
Also backing up after the U.S. Open is Marc Leishman, the only Australian to make the cut at Erin Hills and a former winner of this event.
Leishman’s 2012 victory here was his first on the PGA TOUR and came on the back of a remarkable 8-under 62 in the final round.
His form at the Connecticut stop has been a mixed bag in the five years since though he led through two rounds last year before eventually finishing T9.
Historically less impressive at this venue has been fellow Victorian Geoff Ogilvy whose 2017 has been somewhat of a rollercoaster.
The 2006 U.S. Open winner is playing the season on a one time only career money list exemption and is currently 119th on the FedEx Cup points list where he needs to be top-125 at season’s end to retain his card for 2018.
Ogilvy is playing the tournament for just the fourth time, his record to date being two missed cuts and a T22 finish which came in 2001.
Also hovering around the top-125 mark on the FedEx Cup list is Cameron Percy who at 138 is in need of some good results.
Percy makes his fifth appearance at TPC River Highlands where his best result came in 2013 when T30.
The 43-year-old has struggled in recent weeks with four consecutive missed cuts so will be keen to turn that form around come Thursday.
Stuart Appleby, Rod Pampling, Greg Chalmers and Brett Drewitt round out the Australian challenge while Matt Jones is third on the alternates list.
