Wilson makes hot start in hunt for tour card


Victorian Professional Jack Wilson has dominated the first round of the Final Stage Qualifying School presented by Cobra Puma Golf at Sandhurst Golf Club.

Victorian Professional Jack Wilson has dominated the first round of the Final Stage Qualifying School presented by Cobra Puma Golf at Sandhurst Golf Club.

""The young gun Pro fired a bogey free round which included six birdies and an eagle in his quest to secure playing rights on the PGA Tour of Australasia for 2016. 

Wilson will go into tomorrow’s second round with a handy three shot lead.

Wilson surged onto the PGA Tour of Australasia in 2013 claiming the WA Goldfields PGA Championship to become the first PGA Trainee to win on Tour.

This was followed by a third place finish at the Australian PGA Championship behind Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler.

He finished 5th on the Order of Merit that same year and took advantage of various playing opportunities including attending Qualifying Schools for the European Tour and Web.com Tour.

In 2014, Wilson competing on OneAsia and has had limited invites on the European Tour and European Challenge Tour.

Wilson graduated from the PGA Trainee Program in 2014 and during his three years of study was one of the top performing Trainees in both academics and playing. His playing success earning him status on the PGA Tour of Australasia from 2011. 

Wilson is also also a scholarship holder at the Victorian Institute of Sport and member at the Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club in Dingley.

Five players are currently tied for second place after round one. Kota Kagasaki, Damien Jordan, Josh Cabban, Josh Younger and Korean Doong Gyu Han each fired and opening round of 5-under 67. While Luke Humphries, Chris Gaunt, Leigh McKechnie, Callan O’Reilly, Aaron Wilkin and Christopher Wood are a further shot back after a 4-under 68.

This week’s winner will gain Tournament Exemption Category 7 (a) for the duration of the 2016 season. A playoff will determine the winner if players are tied.

Players ranked two to five will be placed in Exemption Category 10 for the duration of the 2016 season, while players ranked six to 40 will be placed in Exemption Category 13 for the duration of the 2016 season.

In addition to their Tour card, three of the top performing players this week will earn an equipment and monetary contract from Cobra Puma Golf, joining the likes of Rickie Fowler, Jonas Blixt and Graham Delaet as Cobra Puma Golf ambassadors.

Round two of the Final Stage Qualifying School presented by Cobra Puma Golf will get underway at Sandhurst Golf Club tomorrow morning at 7:30am.
