Five years ago Oliver Goss triumphed at the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open following a six hole playoff with fellow amateur Brady Watt.

This week Goss has returned to Royal Perth Golf Club for the first time since he won the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia title.

A special moment in his career, Goss can still recall every shot of his victory yet it was one of Watt’s which stands out as the highlight.

“It’s hard to believe that it was five years ago, time has just flown by but I have some fond memories,” said Goss.

“I can still remember most of the final round and every shot I played so hopefully I can recreate the same week that I had five years ago.

“But probably the shot which stands out for me wasn’t even my own, it was Brady’s in the playoff. He made up and down from the 18^th green bunker to the tight pin on 8 and then holed a 20 footer for birdie. I had to hole a 10-12 footer on top of him just to keep it going.

“They were all really good shots from both of us. It was definitely an exciting hour and a half.”

While the Royal Perth layout remains similar to 2012, Goss believes his strategy may have altered since turning Professional in 2014.

“Tee to green the course is basically the same. I think three or four of the greens have changed but they still look great. It really is the same course so I am excited for this week,” added Goss.

“My game has changed a little bit, in that it has become more professional. I don’t go after every single pin like I would as an amateur.

“You don’t really have anything to lose as an amateur but now that I am a Professional and this is technically my job, although I don’t look at it like that, I have a career to maintain, take care of and progress.

“I am not really going to be firing at every single pin but playing more strategically.”

This week, Goss returns to Perth from Web.com Tour School where he has progressed from first to second stage.

“I had to go back to the Web.com Tour Q-School, unfortunately, it’s always tough at Q-School but hopefully next year I am back on the Web.com,” added Goss, whose career would receive a big boost with another WA Open win this week.

“The goal is to win, that is my mindset, it could open a lot of doors for me. It would be nice to have status in Australia again as well as in America.

“I want to do well to get into the Aussie Open and Aussie PGA at the end of the year because I really want to play those events.”

While his schedule hasn’t always allowed him to be home for the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open, Goss has a strong connection to the tournament.

“This is where I grew up, it’s where I am from and all my family and friends are here,” added Goss.

“I don’t think it matters where I am in the world, I will always love to come back and play the WA Open if I have the opportunity.

“It is a special place, a place I call home and I always enjoy coming back to play.”

Goss tees off in the first round of the Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open at 11.25am on Thursday 19 October playing alongside Queenslander Tim Hart and Victorian amateur Matais Sanchez.

Joining Goss in the field this week is defending champion Curtis Luck, ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth champion Brett Rumford and 2018 LPGA Tour graduate Hannah Green.

The Nexus Risk TSA Group WA Open Championship tees off on Thursday 19 October with the winner decided on Sunday 22 October.

In addition to the winner’s share of the $100,000 prize purse, the champion will receive Official World Golf Ranking Points and be fully exempt onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2018 season.
