A late win and final match draw from the International team has kept them in the hunt for a first Presidents Cup victory 19 years as players battled gusty winds at Liberty National GC in Jersey City.

""The first round of Foursomes saw the U.S. Team draw first blood with the star pairing of FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler wrapping up their match against Charl Schwartzel and Hideki Matsuyama in just 14 holes 6 & 4.

A winning run of four holes on the front-9 for Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth went a long way to the U.S. Team’s second win of the day, going up 5 & 4 over Emiliano Grillo and Si Woo Kim to put the host team up 2 – 0.

Adam Scott and Jhonny Vegas took World Number 1 Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar all the way to the 18th but eventually went down after Scott missed a short par on 16 to break a stalemate of 5 holes.

The Internationals couldn’t recover and the U.S. Team claimed their third win of the round 1 up.

One of the most consistent pairings of the International Team of South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace got their team on the board with great team play winning 3 & 1 over Daniel Berger and Brooks Koepka.

The all Aussie pairing of Jason Day and Marc Leishman ended the day clawing back a half point for the Internationals all square with Presidents Cup stalwart Phil Mickelson and Kevin Kisner.

Leishman’s brilliant iron play and Day’s accuracy off the tee was on fire early before a spirited fight led by Mickelson resulted in the teams splitting the final point of the day.

Tomorrow’s round will see five Four-ball matches with the U.S. leading 3.5 – 1.5.
