its South Pacific swing at this week’s Fiji International, the Tour Insider has
been studying the form guide over a Fiji Gold on the magnificent Natadola
Beach.
If there’s one thing I can foresee this week, it’s that the sun will
shine and the golf on display will be divine.
#1 Vijay Singh
The local golfing hero in Fiji is set for his third tilt at
the title. Having fallen just short last year after a closing course record 65
on the final day, Singh comes home with one thing on his mind – Winning. Renowned
for his work ethic both on and off the course, Vijay has emitted a relaxed aura
so far this week. With recent confirmation that Vijay will oversee the redevelopment
of 13 holes upon completion of the tournament, it is somewhat fitting that
Vijay may very well hit the final putt on Sunday afternoon.
#2 Michael Hendry
This Kiwi has spent the majority of his year playing on the
Japan Golf Tour. No stranger to the Natadola layout, Hendry has found previous
success here in smaller events and will no doubt be channeling those vibes
throughout the week. An outstanding six top-10’s already this year in Japan and
a ball flight suited to windy conditions, keep "The Count" on your radar, sit
back, and watch the birdies flow.
#3 Jason Scrivener
A mixed year on the European Tour for Jason sees him sitting
right on the bubble of keeping his European card. With the Alfred Dunhill Links
Championship on this week against the Fiji International, it’s imperative Jason
plays well this week and I know he is just the man to rise to the occasion. With
a golf swing desired by most, accompanied by a superb touch around the greens,
Scrivener’s only downfall may be a lack of preparation after he missed his
connecting flight from LA and arrived a day late. Paired alongside Vijay and
good friend Michael Sim, this will be a group to watch during the first two
rounds.
#4 Ben Eccles
This kid really stood up and grabbed the attention of the Professionals
on tour when he won last year’s NSW Open by three shots…as an amateur! Since
the win it’s been a whirlwind of results for Eccles’ rookie year which includes
two top-10’s on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, equaling fellow ISM
clients Lee Westwood and Darren Clarkes course record in Dubai with a 63 and
recently progressing through to second stage of European Tour Qualifying
School. Whilst it’s his first time here at Natadola, Eccles has brought the
family along for the ride and will no doubt welcome the familiar faces
throughout the week.
#5 Tim Hart
A near flawless year so far on the PGA Tour of Australasia,
Hart has regularly been in contention but just hasn’t found what he needs to
lift the trophy on Sunday. There’s no doubt this is a step up in tournament
level for Timmy but it’s safe to say he enjoys the Natadola layout, shooting 16-under
across three rounds earlier this year at this very course. He won the title by
a convincing eight shots after leaving his driver back in Australia.
Consistency is the key for Hart, after a disappointing exit from first stage of
Web.com Qualifying School last week, a win this week could be just what he
needs to kick start his career.
