As the field were trying to survive the final round at the Sylvania BMW Legends Pro-Am at Cronulla, Peter Fowler was showing his class and experience in tough conditions firing 3-under 64 to finish on 5 under 129.

""Fowler’s round was the best of the day and it would see him take a three shot victory.

With overnight leader Lonard hitting form after shooting 11-under in his last two rounds it was going to take something special to run him down.

The final round would be completely different too day one with strong winds whipping across the golf course. Out of all the leaders it was clear that Fowler was handling conditions best. He would set his victory up with a fine 3-under 32 on the front nine. Showing all his class Fowler would seal his win with a birdie on the 18th hole.

“I played so well from tee to green today. I don’t think I’ve played that well tee to green for a long time," said Fowler.

“Pete (Lonard) probably can’t believe how I could of shot that score today after he saw me play last week in the Australian Open. They do a great job here at Cronulla and I’d just like to thank everyone involved."

Lonard got off to a rough start with a couple of bogeys early in the round and made the turn 3-over. He would steady himself on the back nine and hang on for a runner up finish ending the tournament with rounds of 61,71 for a 2-under 132 total. Hopefully Lonard can continue his good form next week as he tries to play his way onto the Champions Tour in the US for 2019.

Finishing in third was David Merriman with rounds of 63,70 for a 1-under 133 total. Rounding out the top five was Steve Conran, Darren Rix, Michael Harwood and Ken Tarling on even par 134.

The Ladbrokes Legends Tour will move to the Wayne Riley Georges River Council Legends Pro Am on Friday.

""Things got tight on the back-9 but Harwood would stay solid for a one shot victory. Pushing him all the way was joint overnight leader David Merriman who birdied the last for a runner up finish.

Three players would start the final round in the lead but Michael Harwood who was defending champion would prevail with rounds of 67 and 69 for a 2-under total of 136.

After chipping in on the 10th hole to get to 5-under for the tournament it look like plain sailing for Harwood. But bogeys on the 11th,13th and 17th made things a lot tighter. Standing on the 18th tee Harwood would see his closet rival Merriman sink a 20 footer for birdie to get within one shot. Harwood’s experience would shine through closing out with a fine par for a one shot victory.

“It’s a great event that they put on here at Cronulla. My form of late hasn’t been great but I’m happy to have been able to get the job done today," said Harwood.

Fighting all the way would be the ever consistent David Merriman his scores of 67 and 70 for a 1-under total of 137 to finish with runner up honours.

Tied for third was be one of the overnight leaders Graham Banister and Paul Powell who would shoot the low round of the tournament 3-under 66 on the final day. They finished with even par totals of 138

But the story of the day came from amateur Garry Beard who would walk away with a Series 1 BMW for his hole-in-one on the par 3 18th.

“I can’t believe it, I’d only had 5 stableford points all day so it’s fair to say I didn’t see that shot coming," said Beard

Playing with his brother Allyn Beard, good mate Peter Longhurst and alongside PGA Pro Mark McFadden this was a day of golf he won’t forget.

Beard scored a hole in one on the 140 metre par-3 18th hole at the Cronulla Golf Club thanks to a perfectly struck 6iron.

For his efforts Beard will be driving home in a new BMW 1 Series thanks to Sylvania BMW which is quite the step up from the dinner set he won for his ace 20 years ago at Kareela Golf Club.
