Leishman wins, Aussie fans cash in

Close to 1,000 Australian golf fans will get to see Marc Leishman in the flesh for free after the Victorian recorded the fourth PGA Tour win of his career at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia on Sunday.

Close to 1,000 Australian golf fans will get to see Marc Leishman in the flesh for free after the Victorian recorded the fourth PGA Tour win of his career at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia on Sunday.

"MarcWhen it was announced earlier in the year that the reigning Greg Norman Medal winner would be returning to the Gold Coast to contest the Australian PGA Championship at RACV Royal Pines Resort from November 29 the PGA of Australia began a promotion whereby ‘If Leish wins, you win’.

Six weeks out from the tournament and with almost 1,000 people registered the 34-year-old finally delivered, closing out a five-shot win over Emiliano Grillo, Chesson Hadley and Bronson Burgoon in impressive fashion at TPC Kuala Lumpur.

It was Leishman’s first win since his triumph at the BMW Championship last September and is hopefully a portent of more success over the Aussie summer where he will represent Australia at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf in Melbourne and then seek to win his first Australian PGA title in front of what will now be a very appreciative gallery.

With a history of strong results at the CIMB Classic it was a less than auspicious start for Leishman who bogeyed the opening hole of the tournament and struggled to bring his driver under control over the opening nine holes.

But from the third hole of his second round Leishman played the next 23 holes in 16-under par to vault to the top of the leaderboard alongside Woodland and Shubhankar Sharma at 19-under par with 18 holes left to play.

Four straight birdies from the second hole opened up a two-shot buffer over Woodland early on Sunday and when a 50-foot bomb dropped on the ninth hole he made the turn at 24-under and with the tournament well in hand.

A bogey at the par-4 13th after his approach from the right rough found the greenside bunker stalled Leishman’s momentum but only momentarily, a perfectly played chip at the par-3 15th leading to a crucial par save at an important time.

Having his ball finish in a divot at the short 16th didn’t stop Leishman from making his sixth birdie of the day, a par at 17 and closing birdie at the par-5 18th the best way possible to mark a return to the winner’s circle.

Leishman’s World Cup partner, Cameron Smith, was the only other Australian in the field and finished tied for 22nd at 16-under par while New Zealand’s Danny Lee – who recorded an ace in the first round – shot 66 on Sunday to finish tied for 33rd.

Lee will also head to Australia as he partners Ryan Fox to represent New Zealand at the ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf.

Affable Englishmen Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston will make his debut at the Australian PGA Championship from November 29 – December 2at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.

"AndrewAussie golf fans will get their slice of Beef when he tees up alongside Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith when golf is celebrated on the Gold Coast.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to Australia in the summer and I definitely couldn’t call myself a proper Englishman if I haven’t ticked the Gold Coast off my list,” said Johnston.

“To be part of the last professional tournament in Australia for the year will be pretty cool too; it will be good fun celebrating the year Down Under with everyone.”

Since winning twice on the Challenge Tour in 2014, Johnston has been a regular fixture on the European Tour and broke through for a win on the circuit in 2016 at the Real Club Valderrama Open de España, Hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

In 2018 he’s recorded three top-10 results including a runner-up finish at Hero Indian Open where he went down in a playoff to Matt Wallace.

Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia which owns the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, said Johnston is a great addition to the Australian PGA Championship which has created a festival atmosphere on the Gold Coast by embracing the famous for fun mantra.

“The Australian PGA Championship is all about celebrating golf, it is a fun filled week which welcomes and embraces all sports fans. Having created this young and energetic atmosphere our aim each year is to attract players which personify those traits which Beef certainly does.

“Beef is a sociable character with an exciting golf game which people love to watch. I am sure that he will be a hit with the crowds and will add to the on-course action at the Australian PGA Championship.”

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the Australian PGA Championship continued to demonstrate its value to the It’s Live! in Queensland major events calendar.

“It’s great to see the Australian PGA Championship drawing world-class talent to the Gold Coast,” she said.

“Attracting high-profile golfers to the event helps showcase Queensland and the Gold Coast to the world and helps to lure visitors to the region.

“Beef is a real character and I’m sure he’ll be a crowd favourite. I hope he stays after the tournament and gets to experience what we have to offer here in Queensland.

“We’re proud to support events like the Australian PGA Championship because they help to solidify Queensland’s reputation as a world-class destination for major events.”

The Queensland Government, via Tourism and Events Queensland, is proud to support the Australian PGA Championship, which features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Your perfect next event is in Queensland where live events combine with the most incredible destinations, and life is beautiful one day, perfect the next.

World Number 16 Marc Leishman has pledged his continued support of the Australian PGA Championship as the first player to sign on to the 2018 tournament to be held from 29 November -2 December.

World Number 16 Marc Leishman has pledged his continued support of the Australian PGA Championship as the first player to sign on to the 2018 tournament to be held from 29 November -2 December.

""Leishman, who last year won the Greg Norman Medal, will return to RACV Royal Pines Resort with one thing on his mind; winning.

The Victorian has finished in the top-15 three of the four times he has teed it up on the Gold Coast layout for the Australian PGA Championship.

But for all his numerous career achievements which are highlighted by three PGA TOUR wins and four top-10 Major finishes, Leishman is yet to claim one of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia’s pinnacle titles.

This is a fact he very much hopes to change this December.

“Winning a significant title on home soil is a huge career goal of mine, winning the Australian PGA Championship would certainly rank high on my resume if I were able to accomplish it,” said Leishman.

“I have played well at RACV Royal Pines Resort over the past few years. I definitely think it is a layout that suits my game so I believe winning there is within my grasp.

“Obviously a lot of different things need to align to win a golf tournament but I will be preparing myself to the best of my ability to put in a good showing at the Australian PGA Championship.”

Leishman has enjoyed a strong start to his 2018 PGA TOUR season already recording four top-10 results including a tied seventh at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and outright ninth at The Masters.

A late edition to the field in 2017, Leishman becomes the first player to commit to the European Tour co-sanctioned tournament in 2018.

“Marc has always been a wonderful supporter of Australian golf and one of my personal highlights of the 2017 season was watching Marc receive the Greg Norman Medal,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia which owns the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia.

“We are delighted Marc will be joining us on the Gold Coast for the Australian PGA Championship this year. We enjoy welcoming home all our leading Australians so we can celebrate their achievement throughout the year at the final event of the season; the Australian PGA Championship.

“At the Australian PGA Championship we aim to create a festival of golf, Marc has always embraced the atmosphere and is a hit with Australian sports fans and I am sure will give them plenty to cheer about this December.”

2018 has been a big year for sport on the Gold Coast and the Australian PGA Championship is set to close out the year in style.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said Leishman’s inclusion in the 2018 event would again ensure a strong field.

“The Australian PGA Championships always attracts a strong international field of world-class golfers, but to have Australia’s best players also competing is what makes it truly special,” she said.

“Marc is the reigning Greg Norman Medallist and has always drawn a good crowd at this event, so it’s great to have him return this year.

“The Australian PGA Championships has proven itself as a world-class golfing event and further secures Queensland’s reputation as Australia’s best event destination.”

The Australian PGA Championship had a thrilling playoff finish to determine this year’s winner and the excitement generated by that win was matched by the enjoyment experienced by all who attended the tournament week at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

""“RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast has been a fantastic host of the Australian PGA Championship for the past five years,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia.

“We are delighted to have enjoyed a home that offers our players, guests and their families a real holiday destination, with first rate facilities and outstanding golfing.

“We are thrilled that the Australian PGA Championship will return to RACV Royal Pines Resort from 29 November to 2 December 2018.”

The 2018 commitment is part of an expanded partnership which will see a number of PGA tournaments played at Victorian RACV Resorts.

The Victorian PGA Championship, part of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, will move to the newly expanded RACV Cape Schanck Resort in October 2018 and new Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series events will be held at the RACV Healesville Country Club and RACV Torquay Resort.

RACV Goldfields Resort will also host a brand new two-day pro-am in the same format as the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth. Healesville and Goldfields will also host two new Ladbrokes Legends Tour events.

RACV’s golfing facilities are of the highest standard so it came as no surprise that last week the talk on course was the enjoyment experienced by the players in tackling the Graham Marsh designed course with many players commenting on the improvements and great quality of the course, including the 2017 Champion, Cameron Smith.

“I think we’ve played three years on this course now since the redesign.  Last year to this year was a huge improvement, just the grass filling in and you can actually play some shots that Mr. Marsh wants you to play,” said Smith.

Gold Coast local and former Masters Champion Adam Scott was also complimentary of the course.

“You can see the greens are starting to receive some shots and it’s probably playing more and more like the designer would have hoped,” said Scott.

“It’s really settling in nicely and I think it’s going to play a little better each year as we keep going.  So I’m very happy with the shape of the course this year.”

The work done by the course staff was also commended.

“The conditioning of the golf course for this year’s tournament was the best it has been since the Championship moved to RACV Royal Pines Resort,” said Andrew Langford-Jones, Director of Tournaments for the PGA of Australia.

“The players were in very high praise of the presentation and playability of the golf course and the head Superintendent, Lincoln Coombes and his team should be congratulated on the effort they made. The European Tour players and staff were also extremely complimentary of the golf course and thoroughly enjoyed their week at the venue.”

Off the course, players and guests attending the week enjoyed first class hospitality during the Greg Norman Medal Dinner that honoured Victorian Marc Leishman, and the resort facilities that RACV Royal Pines Resort is renowned for.

“We had a tremendous week on the Gold Coast last week and enjoy a strong and positive relationship with RACV as shown with this new agreement,” continued Kirkman.

Just two days after his Australian PGA Championship win, Cameron Smith was back on the golf course supporting John Senden’s charity golf day.

Just two days after his Australian PGA Championship win, Cameron Smith was back on the golf course supporting John Senden’s charity golf day.

""Playing at Keperra Country Club to raise money for Cure Brain Cancer, the peak organisation for brain cancer research, awareness and advocacy in Australia, Smith teed it up with his girlfriend Jordan Ontiveros in support of Senden.

“He only lives five minutes away from me and I grew up watching him play,” said Smith.

“I have also played practice rounds with him at Major Championships; he is a very knowledgeable guy.

“I wish him and his family all the best.”

With the win still yet to sink in, Smith will head back to the PGA TOUR the Australian PGA Champion but with one goal on his mind; The Masters.

Now ranked 61 in the Official World Golf Rankings, jumping 25 places thanks to his win, Smith will need to be inside the top-50 or record a win to tee it up at The Masters in April.

“It still really hasn’t sunk in yet, I still can’t believe that I have it (Joe Kirkwood Cup) with me. I woke up this morning and it was down the bottom of the stairs…it was like oh there it is. It is one of the best things I have ever done,” added Smith.

“It would have been nice to get inside the top-50 for The Masters start but that is something I can work on in the beginning of the year and get there in April.

“If I can get off to a decent start in the U.S. I should be able to tick it off.

“I will start the season in Hawaii, then play a couple more on the west coast and then see what happens from there.”

But before he heads back to the PGA TOUR, Smith is set to inspire the next wave of Aussie junior golfers at his own junior golf day at Wantima Golf Course.

“I remember Adam Scott was talking to us down at Kingston Heath once and how I saw him at that time, now that I am kind of there is just really weird,” added Smith, who hosted a MyGolf junior clinic at the Australian PGA Championship.

“I still look up to Adam now so to be in the same spot he is in, in front of those kids eyes is really weird.

“I have been wanting to get a junior tournament at Wantima for the last few years so to finally get it done with the help of my manager and supporters at Wantima is really cool.”

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) and City of Gold Coast today announced their commitment to the PGA of Australia (PGA) to support the Australian PGA Championship for a further three years.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) and City of Gold Coast today announced their commitment to the PGA of Australia (PGA) to support the Australian PGA Championship for a further three years.

""A day after the close of one of the most successful events to date, and where Queenslander Cameron Smith hoisted the Kirkwood Cup in a thrilling playoff over Jordan Zunic, the three organisations have celebrated the extension of their agreements.

This will tee off with the 2018 Australian PGA Championship which will be played from 29 November to 2 December 2018. The tournament is a flagship event on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, and is co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

The Australian PGA Championship is a festival of golf and the tournament week also includes the MyGolf Kids Day presented by Cobra Puma and the Greg Norman Medal Dinner. Players and fans have also enjoyed the nerve wracking excitement of the Soniq Million Dollar Hole which is now synonymous with the event.

Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Leanne Coddington said she was delighted to extend an already successful partnership.

“TEQ has a proud history with this event and our successful partnership with the PGA of Australia has resulted in strong crowd numbers as well as new initiatives including the Soniq Million Dollar Hole and the Tournament Village,” she said.

“The Australian PGA Championship is an important part of the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar and with the strength of the field growing each year, it has cemented itself as a premiere golf event.

“But more than that, the championship enhances the Gold Coast’s reputation as a world-class events destination and gives us a global platform to promote Queensland’s unique tourism offerings.”

The tournament honour roll features an incredible list of past champions including Adam Scott (2013) Greg Chalmers (2014 & 2011), Peter Senior (2010, 2003 & 1989).

Since the inaugural event on the Gold Coast in 2013, the tournament has found strong support in City of Gold Coast, and Acting Mayor Donna Gates.

“One of the biggest legacy outcomes for our city, post the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will be our drive to attract more world-class sporting events,’’ said Acting Mayor Gates.

“This announcement fits that bill perfectly with the Australian PGA Championship an absolute winner for the sport and our city. Well done to the PGA and Tourism and Events Queensland.’’

Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia which oversees the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia praised the strong, collaborative and positive relationship that the PGA has shared with TEQ and COGC over the last five years.

“The PGA has enjoyed a fantastic relationship with the teams at both TEQ and COGC.  TEQ has continued to show their commitment to the continued growth of the event, and have celebrated the successes of the tournament with us along the way. It’s wonderful to see that the Australian PGA Championship is an integral part of the It’s Live in Queensland events calendar.

“The City of Gold Coast is a key partner for the Australian PGA Championship and we are pleased to be working with them for another three years to ensure that this event continues to shine the world’s spotlight on the Gold Coast as a home of world class international sporting events. We are thrilled that the residents of the Gold Coast will continue to have the opportunity to see international golfing superstars in action for the next three years."

Ben Cowen, Director of International Policy, European Tour, added: “We are delighted to be returning to Queensland for a further three years and with the support of TEQ and City of Gold Coast, we believe this tournament will continue its long and proud history as one of Australia’s premier sporting events.

“Our relationship with the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia continues to go from strength to strength each year, and this tournament offers vital playing opportunities for our European Tour members in a superb setting. We had a fantastic winner last week in Cameron Smith, and we can’t wait to see more of the world’s best golfers out here on the Gold Coast.”

Queensland Cameron Smith has won the 2017 Australian PGA Championship

""Smith shot rounds of 68, 67, 67, 68 to finish on 18-under the card, along with New South Welshman Jordan Zunic to force a playoff.

The pair played the 18th twice, on the second trip, Zunic made bogey and Smith made par to win the last event on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour Australasia calendar.

The event is co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

More to come.

Queenslander Cameron Smith has thrilled a hometown crowd winning the 2017 Australian PGA Championship on the second playoff hole against New South Welshman Jordan Zunic.

Queenslander Cameron Smith has thrilled a hometown crowd winning the 2017 Australian PGA Championship on the second playoff hole against New South Welshman Jordan Zunic.

""Smith shot rounds of 68, 67, 67 and 68 to finish regulation play on 18-under the card alongside Zunic, who began the final round with a three shot lead. The pair were in a head-to-head battle through the 18 holes today, sharing and swapping the lead on multiple occasions.

The Queenslander edged to a one shot lead over Zunic on the 17th hole but dropped a shot on the 18th where Zunic made par to force the playoff.

The pair both made par on the first playoff and after Zunic made bogey on the second trip, Smith got to the hole in four shots to etch his name on the Joe Kirkwood Cup.

“That was a bit of a grind out there today. I didn’t quite have my best ball‑striking stuff on the back-9 but managed to get away with some good short game and just holing the putts that I needed to hole,” said Smith.

“I tried to stay aggressive all day. With the lead Jordan had, I thought that I had to stay aggressive, I knew he was playing well.”

The win marks Smith’s first individual win as a Professional, his other coming in the PGA TOUR’s Zurich Classic, a team event he won with Swede Jonas Blixt, who watched on from the side of the 18th green today.

He said he remembers attending the Australian PGA Championship and has always had winning this tournament as a goal in his career and will play the tournament as long as he’s able to make it back home.

“I remember going out there with dad and mum watching Adam (Scott) and those type of guys up there at Coolum,” added Smith.

“And then it was really one of my goals, I wanted to win one down here, and just being in Queensland makes it a little bit more special.

“This will be on my schedule as long as I have my card and full status in the U.S.; I’ll definitely come back down here and play two or three that are here, for sure.”

Thanks to the Australian PGA Championship’s co-sanctioning with the European Tour, Smith now has exemption on their Tour until the end of 2019, he’s yet to decide if he’ll take up the opportunity but mentioned it’s somewhere he’d like to play Professionally.

“I didn’t even realise that (exemption) was what happened. I might go over there for a few weeks and maybe do a little playing holiday type thing, I’m not sure. It would be nice to get over there and play some, I’m sure,” added Smith who picked up a pay cheque of AU$237,500.

Zunic, who equaled the course record with his round of 64 yesterday was gracious in defeat and is proud of how far his game has come after a run of tough results.

“I didn’t quite hit it as well off the tee today which didn’t give me as many birdie opportunities, and the couple birdie opportunities I had late on the back-9 in regular play I just ran by the edge,” said Zunic.

“So I’m pretty happy with everything this week.  I’ve come a long way from where I was last week and missing a few cuts, so I’m happy about that.”

South Australian Adam Bland finished third at 17-under the card, narrowly missing the second place finish he needed to win the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit title, that honour goes to West Australian Brett Rumford who accumulated AU$313,094 this year mostly thanks to his win at the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth.

Rumford will now receive an invitation to The 147th Open Championship as well as the WGC – Mexico Championship and the WGC – Bridgestone Invitational.

Finishing in a tie for fourth was Victorian’s David Bransdon and Marc Leishman who both shot 4-under 68 today to be 14-under the card following four rounds.

Greg Norman Medalist Leishman said he left some opportunities out there with his putter.

“I actually played really well. Same sort of story as yesterday with the putter, just had a lot of opportunities and didn’t take them,” said Leishman.

“So disappointed in that respect but bogey‑free 68, I finished fourth, I think. Not exactly what I was after, but still a pretty good week.”

Defending champion Harold Varner III continued his strong form at the Australian PGA Championship with a third top-10 finish in three years, he shot 6-under 66 to finish 12-under the card and outright 6th.

He said he looks forward to making a return to Queensland and the tournament in the future.

“It’s been a blast; I can’t wait to come back. Just yesterday I had a bad attitude and it showed with the score. So it’s golf, I’ve just got to learn from it,” said Varner.

“I obviously played pretty well here, so I just need to keep my game sharp and come back.”

American Sean Crocker and Victorian Lucas Herbert finished tied for 7th at 11-under the card with Crocker being awarded the Kel Nagle Plate for the best performing rookie at the Australian PGA Championship.

England’s Nathan Kimsey and South Australian Wade Ormsby rounded out the top-10 on 10-under the card.

The ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia 2018 season will begin at the Rebel Sport Masters to be played at Wainui Golf Club in New Zealand from 11 – 14 January.

Jordan Zunic has fired a course record equaling 8-under 64 to hold the outright lead at the Australian PGA Championship with one round to go.

Jordan Zunic has fired a course record equaling 8-under 64 to hold the outright lead at the Australian PGA Championship with one round to go.

""He is the solo leader of the tournament for the first time this week at 17-under the card.

Zunic started his third round with a bang draining a lengthy birdie putt on the 1st, he then went on to birdie 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15 and 16 to sit at 11-under par with two holes to go.

He looked likely to finish with an elusive sub-60 score before recording a bogey on 16 and a double on 18, the 2015 New Zealand Open champion is still delighted with his brilliant 64.

“I just think of 16 good holes, that’s all I see in my mind and that’s all I’m sure we’ll talk about tonight because I played unbelievable golf for 16 holes,” said Zunic.

“If you had told me that I was going to have 64 at the start of today, I would have taken it, that’s for sure.  It was a shame what happened on the last two holes, but to be honest, I didn’t even do much wrong.

“I still stuck to my processes on the last two holes, I just got a little bit unlucky on 17, I just pulled my 2‑iron a little left.

“And then on the last hole, my drive was pretty good, just slightly right of where I was trying to hit it and unfortunately caught that bunker as well. In my mind I don’t really feel like I did much wrong even though I did drop a few on the last two holes.”

Zunic, who also held the round one lead, has cited fellow Professional and former Australian PGA champion Nick O’Hern’s book ‘Tour Mentality: Inside the Mind of a Tour Pro’ as the catalyst for a turnaround in his mental game.

“I actually had a chat with Nick this morning before I teed off. He agreed to meet me this morning, just had a bit of a chat, nothing too serious,” added Zunic.

“I just told him how I was feeling and what I did yesterday and how I’ve been doing things really well.  He just reassured me that what I was doing was good. So yeah, it was just nice to sit down and talk to him.  It just helped me probably calm the nerves a little bit before I teed off today.”

His mental game came in to play as he made the turn at 7-under, he said it was difficult to keep his mind on the job as thoughts of a sub-60 round began to manifest.

“It is tough, but to be honest with you, I found I didn’t have much problem with that today.  There might have been one time when I had to think and I went, I’m doing pretty good today, that might be a possibility,” added Zunic.

“But I was in a good mindset so I quickly got out of that and I just quickly got back to the moment I was in and that’s what allowed me in the middle of the round there to continue to make more birdies obviously after I turned after the front nine.

“So it is tough, but if you make yourself focus on what you know you should focus on, you shouldn’t have any problem just staying in the moment and hitting each shot as it comes.”

Queenslander Cameron Smith had a front seat to the action on course playing in Zunic’s group today and had a great round of his own firing 5-under 67 to be in second position at 14-under the card, three shots behind Zunic.

“He put on a bit of a display the first 13 or 14 holes there.  He was on a bit of a run, it was pretty incredible to watch actually,” said Smith.

“And in that wind he was just a magician on the greens as well.  I think he would have had 15 putts through 14 holes, it was amazing.”

Smith said he had to stick to his game plan but at the same time, not let Zunic streak away to an unassailable lead.

“I just didn’t let Jordan’s round get ahead of me there, I just kept doing what I was doing. I knew I was playing well, I knew I was putting well. Just needed a couple chances and took advantage of them.”

South Australian Adam Bland had 1-under 70 round to be a further shot back in third at 13-under the card.

Victorian David Bransdon had his best round of the tournament carding a 6-under 66 to be in a tie for fourth position alongside fellow Victorian Marc Leishman at 10-under the card.

Leishman had a round to forget finishing 2-over par, he struggled to get anything going with his putter but remains positive heading in to tomorrow’s final round.

“It was a tough day, I actually played quite well early and just couldn’t make any putts unfortunately,” said Leishman.

“I bogeyed 12, doubled 13.  Frustration got the best of me on the 13th tee there. I got one birdie coming in, a couple good par saves.

“So it’s disappointing, but I think I’m, what, seven or eight back going into tomorrow. I need to go out and attack and try and shoot as low as I can.”

Two-time Australian PGA champion Greg Chalmers is in sixth position at 9-under the card while Sergio Garcia admitted again fatigue played a factor in what he said was a disappointing round of 2-under 70, the Spaniard is in seventh spot, 8-under the card.

“I am proud of myself because I feel like I’m going on fumes, so for that obviously my head is not as sharp as it should be and I’m making stupid mistakes here and there.  But other than that, I feel like I fought hard again today,” said Garcia.

“I’m going to go out there and fight. Obviously, hopefully I’ll be able to play nicely, but it’s the last day of school and I’m excited to finish the year, which has been a great year, and hopefully we can have a good round and have a solid finish here.”

Victorian pair Lucas Herbert and Jack Wilson round out the top-10 at 7-under the card.
