A remarkable back-nine resurgence has seen Darren Beck win the 2019 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Beck arrested a disastrous opening that had him 3-over the card by the fifth hole at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
But six birdies on the back-nine, including three in a row from holes 16 to 18, helped the 41-year-old secure his first ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia victory since 2008.
“It feels great. It was a little nerve-wracking five or six holes in,” Beck said.
“There was a big change in scores. I birdied the 12th (hole) and Felts (Jarryd Felton) bogeyed so it quickly turned round. I thought I was playing for second for a while there.
“It just feels good to keep it together and finish the way I did. The putter was just unbelievable so I can’t explain how good that felt.”
Beck experienced a radical transformation on the back-nine. After scoring a front-nine 39 – 3-over par – the New South Welshman came to life with a remarkable 6-under 30 on the final nine holes.
He finished the day 3-under the card with rounds of 68, 67, 68 and 69 for a tournament total of 272 – two shots clear of second-placed Jarryd Felton.
“I think it was hard early in the round because we couldn’t see any leaderboards and it’s hard to know what’s going on. You don’t know whether guys have come up from behind and shot a good score,” he said.
“I had to ask a couple of people what the scores were just to make sure and then I could just play my own game without trying to push it.
“On the last, I didn’t want to push too much once I got to a two-shot lead. I just played a three-shotter to try and make a birdie. It’s a great feeling.”
The two-horse race between Beck and Felton was enthralling. Felton returned to the lead early on the front-nine and dashed out to a three-shot lead at the turn.
But Beck seized on Felton’s bogeys on the 12th and 13th to win his first major crown since the 2009 Brunei Open on the Asian Tour.
Felton said he was pleased with his 14-under performance despite feeling he let an opportunity slip.
“It feels good and you’d take second place at the start of the week but I don’t know how many in front I got there at one point,” Felton said.
“I felt like I had a pretty decent lead but I think Darren had about eight putts on the final nine holes and there’s nothing I could do about that.
“He finished with 6-under for that nine and I shot square but the end result is what it is.
“It shows that my game’s not too far away. It would have been good to get a win but you can do it on these and hopefully get a win at the end of the year.”
Beck and Felton will now go on to play next week’s WA Open at Cottesloe Golf Club on the Ladbrokes Pro-Am Series before competing again on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia at the 2019 Victorian PGA Championship.
The win sees Beck receive World Golf Ranking Points and full exemption on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of 2020.
Former PGA TOUR player Michael Sim secured third place thanks to a final round of 67 and a tournament total of 12-under.
Young-gun Robert Hogan finished fourth at 11-under to secure his best-ever professional result, while Blake Proverbs’ fourth-round 66 shot him into the top five at 10-under.

A front-nine surge has helped Darren Beck to a one-shot lead in the penultimate round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Back-to-back birdies saw Beck cut down Jarryd Felton’s three-stoke overnight lead to finish with a round of 4-under 68 – equal best of the day.
“It was good today. It was a bit better ball-striking wise and I holed some nice putts early,” Beck said.
“I gave myself a lot of chances with birdie putts and managed to sneak a couple in on 14 and 15 so I had two good birdies there.
“I haven’t been in this position for a while especially in a tier-two event. It’s great to be in this position and I feel good so I’ll just see what I can do tomorrow.”
Felton relinquished a handy lead following an even-par round of 72. He was one-over through nine holes yet consecutive birdies looked like he had arrested his slump.
But the Perth local faltered with a bogey on 14 to take his total back to 12-under.
“Today was a grind. It was really hard out here, but you can’t be upset with even-par. I’m still in the tournament and am looking forward to tomorrow,” Felton said.
“I’m only one back and as Darren showed, it can all change very quickly. I’m enjoying it out there so we’ll just see what happens.”
Six birdies for Stephen Dartnall helped move the West Australian to third, following a standout 4-under 68 for a 10-under total.
Dartnall, the 2016 WA PGA champion, says a lapse in time spent on the course has surprisingly been beneficial to his performance.
“I haven’t played a lot of golf, let alone social golf. Not relying on golf as an income has let me play with little pressure,” Dartnall said.
“It’s a cliche but I’m playing it one shot at a time.”
Robert Hogan sits in outright fourth place following a steady round of 2-under 70 for a three-round total of 9-under the card, one shot ahead of fellow New South Welshman Jordan Zunic at 8-under.
Experienced campaigner Michael Sim and recently-turned pro Justin Warren remain in contention at 7-under the card in sixth place.
The fourth and final round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship begins at 7:25am AWST at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
The final round of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament will be live streamed on PGA TV from 10am AWST on Sunday 13 October.

Jarryd Felton has extended his lead at the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship following a standout second round.
The West Australian holds a three-shot lead heading into moving day after a 5-under 65 performance that took him to the pinnacle of the #WAPGA leaderboard.
Winds once again made for challenging conditions on the exposed fairways of Kalgoorlie Golf Course’s front-nine but it was here that Felton’s game came to life.
“It’s a reward for good play today,” Felton said.
“It got pretty windy out there over the last nine holes but that’s when I got off to a great start on that front-nine.
“Five birdies in a row from 18 through to four really kick-started the round. Before that I was just kind of plodding along at 1-under at the time but I caught fire on that front-nine.”
The 2017 NZ PGA Championship and 2015 NSW PGA Championship victor knows what it takes to win on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia but insists tomorrow’s 18 holes could be make or break.
“I’ve been in this position before and hopefully I can bring back good memories from the last couple of times I’ve won.
“It’s good to be in the mix again, especially around a course I love and playing well so it’s a good feeling.
“Staying patient with what I can and just hitting quality golf shots will be important. You hit a lot of good golf shots out here that don’t get rewarded and you hit it to some spots that you’ve just got to take your medicine.
“I think I’ve been doing that pretty well so hopefully I can do that on the weekend.”
A hot streak of three straight birdies and an eagle for a round of 5-under elevated Darren Beck to second place on the WA PGA leaderboard after teeing off in the morning of round two.
His early round form from holes one to three went to another level on the 11th but it was the Sydneysider’s putting that had the biggest impact.
“I got off to a good start today so kept the momentum there from yesterday and overall I just played pretty solid.”
“I was just getting around the best I could but I holed some really good putts like 30-footers and 40-footers.”
Two consistent rounds of 68 have seen 24-year-old Justin Warren rocket to contention and hold outright third place ahead of round three.
The recently-turned professional rose to the level of competition, striking an 8-under total.
Overnight joint leader Jordan Zunic remains at 7-under the card after a round of even-par.
He sits alongside Robert Hogan whose rounds of 68 and 69 see him progress to the weekend’s play.
Aussie golf legends Peter Lonard and Brett Rumford remain in the mix at 6-under, alongside Taylor Macdonald, James Marchesani and Stephen Dartnall, who rocketed up the leaderboard with a second round of 65.
The second round cut was made at 1-over with 54 professionals and four amateurs progressing to the final two rounds.
The winner of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship come Sunday will receive the lion’s share of the $137,500 prize purse, World Golf Ranking Points as well as exemption onto the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australia until the end of 2020.
Round three of the WA PGA Championship tees off at 7:15am AWST on Saturday morning from Kalgoorlie Golf Course.

Three straight birdies and an eagle has put Darren Beck into the lead of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Beck’s hot streak started from the first tee with a birdie before he replicated his feats across the first three holes.
His early round form went to another level with an eagle on the 11th, which elevated his standing – and his confidence – to ascend to the pinnacle of #WAPGA leaderboard.
“I started birdie, birdie, birdie which was nice,” Beck said.
“It’s always a great way to start; then I had an eagle on 11. It got me to 5-under and I just carried it on from there and made some good solid pars.
“I got off to a good start today so kept the momentum there from yesterday and overall I just played pretty solid.”
Despite struggling with parts of his game, the Sydneysider’s putting was the game-changer in the second round of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.
“I struggled feeling comfortable over the ball and my irons and especially my woods the last two days,” he said.
“I was just getting around the best I could but I holed some really good putts like 30-footers and 40-footers.
“Without those then I wouldn’t be where I am so it’s helped me out.”
After facing blistering heat in the opening round at Kalgoorlie Golf Course, Beck was relieved the elements had calmed for the morning groups, with decreased winds on course.
“Conditions were good today. We were lucky, we had a one-club breeze so it was very different to yesterday,” he said.
With the morning field now in the clubhouse, Justin Warren has rocketed up the leaderboard to sit one shot behind Beck.
Two consistent rounds of 68 took the 24-year-old to his 8-under total.
“It was pretty solid, very similar to yesterday,” Warren said.
“I drove the ball really well, hit a lot of fairways and gave myself a good amount of opportunities for birdie.
“My putter’s not quite there but I managed to roll a few in and keep the bogeys off the card so I’m looking forward to the next couple of days.”
The level of competition on course has encouraged Warren to get the best out of his game and to take advantage of opportunities.
“I’m loving being out here. I haven’t been pro for very long but since turning I’ve found a new passion for the game and being out here competing with these guy,” he said.
“Playing for money is so different to amateur golf but I love it. It’s great to be up near the lead.”
Overnight leader Jordan Zunic held steady to record a round of even-par in the morning field to remain 7-under for the event.
Peter Lonard’s round of 4-under 68 took the Australian golfing legend to a 6-under two-round total to sit tied for fifth place.
Following a strong start in round one, fellow overnight leader Jarryd Felton will be looking to put his best foot forward in the afternoon field of round two as he aims to make up the two shots to Beck’s lead.

Jordan Zunic has overcome gusting winds and blistering heat to join Jarryd Felton at 7-under the card and lead the opening round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Jordan Zunic has overcome gusting winds and blistering heat to join Jarryd Felton at 7-under the card and lead the opening round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.
Zunic teed off in 38-degree heat at Kalgoorlie Golf Course but it did little to deter the New South Welshman who recorded a bogey-free round in the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.
“I’m very hot right now, it’s super hot out there so I’m glad to be all done for the day but I felt really good out there,” Zunic said.
“I hit the ball quite well and I putted really well too.
“You can always make birdies when you’re holing the putts so it was nice to roll a few in today and start the week off well.”
Winds caused the red dust of the outback to swirl and make shots challenging for the afternoon field.
“The wind was a little tricky. I found that it blows and feels strong but I find that it doesn’t seem to affect the ball that much,” he said.
“It’s really hot here so the air might be a bit thinner compared to when we play on the coast with the breeze that really seems to get your ball.
“I found it quite tricky and we did get stumped by the wind on a few holes so it was a little tricky and required a little bit more concentration.”
A birdie on the 18th was the icing on the cake for the 2018 Isuzu Queensland Open champion who will look to take advantage of cooler conditions when he takes to the 10th tee at 7:25am tomorrow morning.
“That was nice to get it on the green in two there, just in that middle tier and roll on down there and have a tap in for birdie to finish off the day,” he said.
“I can’t wait to get out here tomorrow morning. I think the forecast is cooler for the day so obviously it’s going to be nice compared to today. I’m looking forward to it.”
Western Australia’s Jarryd Felton has credited his ball-striking for an opening round of 7-under 65 at Kalgoorlie Golf Club.
Teeing off early in the morning field alongside Josh Younger and Matias Sanchez, Felton was pleased with the result but felt there was room for improvement.
An eagle on his final hole was the highlight of the round for the Perth local whose affinity with the Goldfields layout has paid dividends.
“I can’t be disappointed with a 65 but I left a lot of shots out there as well,” Felton said.
“My ball striking was really good today. I missed two greens and paid the price as you do around here, but I had a lot of looks inside 10-feet and didn’t capitalise on as many as I wanted. But we got there in the end.
“I love it out here. I seem to play well here. I love this golf course and it definitely rewards good ball striking which is one of my strengths.”
Felton sits alongside elite company at the top of the leaderboard where he is just one shot ahead of fellow West Australian and 2015 WA PGA Championship winner Brett Rumford.
“It feels pretty good,” Felton said of the results. “We wore the same outfit today as well so there’s something in that I think.”
Rumford, who’s made a remarkable recovery since undergoing wrist surgery last November, sits in third place alongside Matt Jager after firing an impressive round of 6-under 66 this morning.
“It was there for the taking really. There was no wind. It got up maybe just a little bit on the back-nine but it was still playable,” Rumford said.
“The greens were receptive and at a moderate pace so if you wedged it well and drove it half decent I think there was a score to be had and I just took advantage of that.”
Former west Aussie Matt Jager endured a rollercoaster opening round at the WA PGA Championship where three bogeys and nine birdies took him to his 6-under total.
Three straight birdies from holes one to three highlighted the round.
Brett Rumford was joined on the tee by David Micheluzzi who today made his professional debut with an impressive bogey-free 5-under par, as well as and one of the tour’s most consistent players, Matt Millar.
Millar unfortunately withdrew from the tournament mid-round due to a back injury.

The road to recovery has been a long one for Rumford since undergoing wrist surgery last November. He said the injury hasn’t deterred him during the opening round.
Rumford, who’s made a remarkable recovery since undergoing wrist surgery last November, sits in second place after firing an impressive round of 6-under 66 this morning, with the afternoon field still to complete their round.
“It was there for the taking really. There was no wind. It got up maybe just a little bit on the back-nine but it was still playable,” Rumford said.
“The greens were receptive and at a moderate pace so if you wedged it well and drove it half decent I think there was a score to be had and I just took advantage of that.”
Steady golf on the Graham Marsh-designed course saw Rumford lead for most of the first round of the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournament.
“The round was just steady. The fairways are reasonably generous when there’s not that much wind. But that’s Graham March design, it’s fantastic,” he said.
“If you’re hitting it reasonably close, within 15-feet on the right level, Graham Marsh’s design has always rewarded that. I just putted really well today.”
Rumford was joined on the tee by David Micheluzzi who today made his professional debut, as well as and one of the tour’s most consistent players, Matt Millar.
Millar unfortunately withdrew from the tournament mid-round due to a back injury.
“I think it’s always devastating to have a key player pull out of a golf tournament so that was disappointing,” Rumford said.
“I know what it was like and to be there with him with his opening tee shot, I can remember mine as if it happened yesterday and it was 20, 25 years ago now, my first tee shot in New Zealand and I know what a bit deal it is. I know that he would have been feeling it on the first tee this morning.”
Micheluzzi completed his opening round tied for third place at 5-under the card alongside WA amateur Haydn Barron and Victorian James Marchesani. For live scores from the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship please visit pga.org.au.

CAMERON JOHN
Fresh from a break from competitive golf and still on a high from his Richmond Tigers winning another premiership, this young guy has more game in his left foot than some of the guys playing this week. I look forward to seeing him back at the top of the leaderboard very soon.
AARON PIKE
TI has been keeping an eye on the King of Crackles’ (KOC) results of late. He had a good first few rounds at the NT PGA and a solid week at the Indonesian Open following that. After finishing second here in 2015 and with a top-five in 2016, it’s safe to say he likes the course as much as a cold beer at the gold bar. Hopefully he can get out of the kitchen and play some golf!
DAVID MICHELUZZI
Hitting the professional ranks this week with a star-studded amateur career under his belt, Australia is waiting to see how good this kid is. Previously ranked as the second-best amateur in the world, this guy definitely has talent. My thoughts? I don’t need to wait; I already know and expect the Jacuzzi to burst onto the scene.
MATT MILLAR
Fresh from holidaying with the family, the man widely known on tour as “rug” is fresh and ready to go. I was going to have him as my main selection this week until the Canberra Raiders managed to lose the grand final. I just hope no one waves their hands to him as he might think its 6 more!
KADE McBRIDE
I’m going to give this bloke another go after a really good effort at Palmerston, where he finished T4 with a TI selection. He has a solid golf game and around a golf course where you have to golf your ball, not just blaze away, I expect another solid showing.

Momentum can be everything in the game of golf, but sometimes a stint away from the fairways is just as beneficial.
In his first year as a senior professional, reigning TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA champion Michael Long has been one of the busiest pros on tour.
Competing in ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia tournaments, Ladbrokes Legends Tour events and Qualifying Schools in between, Long’s schedule has been jam-packed.
A break from golf in the middle of the year, however, has seen the New Zealander raring to go for the Australian summer of golf starting at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
“I had a really busy start to my senior career or the Ladbrokes Legends Tour and I tried to mix it up with a couple of Qualifying Schools and all-in-all it was a very busy time,” Long said.
“I enjoyed every minute of it; but it was quite tiring, so it’s been quite nice to actually have a couple of months there where I haven’t done a lot.
“We’re just starting to wind up now for the rest of the year, so I’m looking forward to it and I’m feeling quite rested going into the second half of the year.”
In the opening round of the WA PGA Championship, Long will be joined by former PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit winner and WA local Jarrod Moseley as well as PGA TOUR winner Peter Lonard: a pair that famously tied to win the 2002 Australian PGA Championship after play was suspended due to darkness.
When they take to the course at 11:50am on Thursday for round one of the championship Long will be ready for the test.
“The older I’m getting the longer the course seems to get. To me one of the hardest things is that it’s a long golf course and sometimes a bit of patience is required.
“Then just the greens are undulating and it’s just a demanding course: it tests all parts of your game.
“Your driving, your irons into the green and then once you get onto the green it’s just the putting and trying to get the ball into the hole.
“In Kalgoorlie, it’s a mixture of knowing when to take your opportunities because it is a demanding golf course; it is long, and knowing when to attack and when to take your medicine and move onto the next hole is important.”
As a two-time winner of the WA PGA Championship, a decade apart in 2008 and 2018, Long will relish the opportunity to return as defending champion.
“I think it’s one of the things that I really look forward to, not only winning but in the next year you come back as defending champion and you get the chance to do it all over again.
“I really do enjoy the challenge of defending again and playing the course again. It’s not extra pressure, I just enjoy it.”
While back-to-back championships are something the 51-year-old is yet to achieve, Long insists there is no extra pressure to win again.
“It’s something I’ve never done in my career but I’d love to. Why not, it’s a wonderful opportunity to try and go back-to-back.
“I think it’s one of the nice things about defending; you’re the only person there that week that can do it, so you might as well give it a crack.”
All Professionals will also have the chance to win a $50,000 gold nugget if they are able to ace the 8th on Saturday and Sunday, and a $50,000 Subaru vehicle on the 13th hole on Sunday.
The TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship tees off on Thursday 10 October at Kalgoorlie Golf Course with the winner to be decided on Sunday 13 October.

New Zealander Michael Long has won the 2018 TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship at Kalgoorlie Golf Course.
Firing rounds of 70, 69, 71, 64 for a four-round total of 14-under 274, Long ran away with the title on the back-9 today.
Long claimed the win by one shot from Brody Martin, who lead following the third round.
This becomes Long’s fifth ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia title and second WA PGA Championship win after he last won the tournament in 2008 at The Cut.
For his win Long picks up 18,750 in prize money, official world rankings points and is now fully exempt on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia until the end of the 2019 season.
More to come.
