After a brilliant start to the Web.com season last week Brett Drewitt and Rhein Gibson will be keen to keep the momentum going when the second event of the Bahamas swing tees off Sunday Australian time.
The pair shared third place at last week’s Great Exuma Classic and spearhead an eight strong Australasian contingent at the Abaco Club in Winding Bay this week.
Gibson and Drewitt are joined in the field by Stuart Appleby, Jamie Arnold, Mathew Goggin, Curtis Luck and New Zealanders Steve Alker and Tim Wilkinson.
The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic is the second tournament in succession to run from Saturday to Wednesday, a continuation of an experiment begun last year to try to attract attention to the secondary Tour.
While Gibson and Drewitt have both made strong starts to the year and will expect another good showing this week it is Western Australia’s Curtis Luck who will be particularly keen to get underway.
The talented 22-year-old made more birdies than any other player in the field last week but a series of clumsy mistakes saw him finish outside the top-10.
Luck has already shown he has the talent to mix it at the top level and it would be a surprise if he wasn’t able to clean up the mistake rate this week.
Stuart Appleby tees up for the first time in 2018 courtesy of his status as a former PGA TOUR Member though it is unclear if he will pursue a full schedule on the Web.com this year.
Also playing on past success is Mathew Goggin who has struggled with injury and poor form in recent seasons.
Jamie Arnold made a decent start to his second year on the secondary Tour in last week’s opening event to finish inside the top-30 but will be looking for better this week.
Arnold showed his class after a slow start to the 2017 season and with a full year on the Tour now under his belt will be taking aim at a top-25 finish in the money list and a PGA TOUR card for 2019.
