Second year Professional Cameron Smith continues to wait for his maiden victory after another tough Sunday, this time at the Asian Tour’s Taiwan Masters.
Smith entered the final round two shots behind leader Steve Lewton of England and while he began poorly, with a bogey at the first, he looked a genuine contender when he reeled off four straight birdies from the fourth.
But as has been the case in recent weeks he stumbled, following the four birdie blitz with four straight bogeys to fall back down the leaderboard.
With the momentum gone he made just one more birdie for the round against two further dropped shots to shoot a 2-over 74 and fall to a share of sixth.
Smith has played brilliantly in stretches over the last month but costly errors at critical times have stalled his momentum.
He had held a share of the lead at some point in each of his three previous events coming into the week and while he was never atop the leader board this week he was never lower than 10th.
A former Australian Amateur champion Smith is one of the country’s most promising young players and is the leading Australian on the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 11th place.
Top Australian honours in Taiwan went to Unho Park who finished T4 with Andrew Dodt next best after Smith in a share of 11th.
Sam Brazel and Marcus Both (T12) were the only other Australians inside the top-20 with Kieran Pratt (T33), Terry Pilkadaris (T43) and Adam Groom (T48) the only others to make the cut.
