West Australian Michael Sim signed off his second round with a closing eagle to take the outright lead early in round two of the Isuzu Queensland Open.

Sim teed off in the morning alongside South Australian Max McCardle and New Zealand’s Brad Shilton in a gradually building wind at The Brisbane Golf Club and finished his round with 5-under 66 to sit atop the leaderboard on 7-under.

“The wind was there pretty much for the entire round which made it tricky,’’ Sim said.

“But I hit some quality shots and had a nice chip-in from the fringe of the green on the 11th. It could have been anything out there. If it wasn’t for my putting from six to eight feet it might have been an even-par round or worse.’’

Finishing his round on the par5 9th hole, Sim entered the clubhouse on a terrific note, scoring an eagle to enter the weekend as leader.

New South Welshman Troy Moses handed in a blemish free card despite the wind in round two for 3-under 68 and finds himself in a tie for second place.

“It was pretty tough out there today so I just tried to really hang in,” Moses said.

“Before I teed off I knew it was going to be tough so mentally I think I was ready for it. I had a few good chances early but I just stayed patient all day.”

Entering his second year as a Professional, Moses said mentally he’s much stronger now than he was at last year’s Isuzu Queensland Open when he made his Professional debut.

“It’s definitely easier, obviously each week you play the same guys and I’m just getting used to it a lot more, I’ve been working on my mind a bit lately and it’s starting to work out.”

Joining Moses in second is Ben Clementson (NSW) who shot 2-under 69; he credited his strong position to his patient play with 36 holes to play.

“I’ve been hitting the ball solidly in the last two days and just minimising the damage,” Clementson said.

“Just keeping it in play is the main thing around here; it’s very easy to make a bogey. I’ve done pretty well so far to minimise that so I’ll go out there tomorrow and try to do the same thing.”

The highlight of the day undoubtedly belonged to Damien Jordan who hit his first career albatross on the 445 metre 9th hole.

It thrust him back in contention after a difficult opening to the Isuzu Queensland Open.

“I hit an OK drive down the left hand side and it chased down there a fair bit more than what I thought it would,” said Jordan whose albatross rescued his round, finishing 1-under for the day.

“I hit a sand wedge in, hit the flag and went in, my first deuce, first albatross ever so it was pretty exciting and a good way to finish.”

Harry Bateman (NZ) holds fourth alone on 5-under with Max McCardle (SA) and Kade McBride tied in 5th on 4-under.

Oliver Goss (WA) and Darren Beck (NSW) are 3-under while Damien Jordan (QLD) and Jordan Zunic (NSW) round out the top-10 on 2-under.

The cut was made at +5 with 52 Professionals and 11 amateurs making the weekend rounds.

The second round of the Isuzu Queensland Open tees off at 9:20am with the leading group of Michael Sim, Troy Moses and Ben Clementson teeing off the 1st tee at 11:00am.
