After a good showing at last week’s Genesis Open Adam Scott will be looking for back to back wins at the first event of the PGA TOUR’s Florida swing, the Honda Classic, this week.
Scott was a one shot winner over Sergio Garcia last year in a thrilling final round duel at the PGA National course in Palm Beach County.
While critical of elements of his game after last week’s T11 finish at Riviera, Scott’s track record at the Honda suggests he has a liking for the course.
In three visits to PGA National he has a win and a top-15 finish, elements that have contributed to making him the pick of the PGA TOUR’s Rob Bolton.
In his weekly Power Rankings column, Bolton says Scott’s form at the course makes him the man most likely this week.
“The defending champ is par or better in his last eight rounds at PGA National,” Bolton writes.
“He’s also connected six straight top-15’s since October. Leads TOUR in strokes gained: putting.”
The 2013 Masters champion, who says he will tinker with his schedule this year in a bid to improve his performance in the majors, leads a seven strong Australian assault in Florida.
Also teeing up at the Honda are Greg Chalmers, John Senden, Brett Drewitt, Marc Leishman, Steven Bowditch and Cameron Percy.
Percy is on a roll since finishing top-10 at the Pebble Beach tournament two weeks ago and will play his third straight event showing some good form.
His opening round at Riviera had him among the early contenders but as weather delays plagued the tournament he slipped down the standings.
It is Percy’s second career appearance at The Honda where a poor weekend in 2013 saw him slip down the leaderboard.
The South Australian was T24 heading to Saturday after scores of 71-66 but a 77-78 finish dropped him to the tail of the field.
John Senden has the best record of the Australians at PGA National having never missed the cut at the venue since the tournament made a permanent home here in 2007.
The Queenslander was T10 here in 2016 and in 2014 shot a stunning 63 in the second round, his best score on the course.
Marc Leishman has missed just one cut in his six starts though his best finish has been T17 coming in both 2010 and 2011.
Greg Chalmers and Steven Bowditch have had limited career success in the tournament while Brett Drewitt tees up for the first time.
Drewitt has had a mixed start to his rookie season with three missed cuts in six events though finished with strong weekend scores of 69-68 in his last outing at Pebble Beach.
