Adam Scott and Jason Day have given themselves an excellent chance at winning the season long FedEx Cup by being in the top-5 heading to the season finale in two weeks’ time.

Despite withdrawing after eight holes of the final round of his BMW Championship defence with a minor back complaint, Jason Day is in fourth position while Scott is in third.

The top-5 entering the TOUR Championship in two weeks’ time in Atlanta have a significant advantage over the rest of the field, guaranteed to win the Cup if they win at East Lake.

Scott and Day both entered the playoffs with that goal in mind and after three weeks have laid the groundwork for a history making first Australian win.

Scott maintained his excellent run of end of season form at Crooked Stick this week with a third straight top-5 finish.

Consistent scores of 69-69-67-71 saw the Queenslander to 12-under for the week and despite being 11 strokes behind runaway winner Paul Casey, Scott will be well pleased with his effort.

After finishing T4 and 4^th outright in the first two playoff events, Scott moved from fifth to third in the FedEx Cup but more importantly has been the most consistent player over the first three weeks.

Also working in Scott’s favour is previous form at East Lake where he was the last player to win the TOUR Championship before the FedEx Cup was introduced in 2007.

For Day the playoff stretch has been less satisfying and his withdrawal in the final round will be a disappointment.

However, with a week off to rest before the season finale it would be a surprise if he was not in the mix at East Lake.

Day has shown all year he has the ability to contend and win even when not playing his best and his motivation will be high to become the first Australian to put his name on the FedEx Cup silverware.

The two Queenslanders are the only Australians to qualify for the TOUR Championship which is reserved for the top-30 point earners.

Marc Leishman and Aaron Baddeley both advanced to the third playoff event this week but both needed a top-3 finish to climb into the elite TOUR Championship field.

Leishman produced his best round of the week Sunday, a 5-under 67, but it was only enough to lift him to 68^th in the standings while Baddeley was T61 in Indiana and 69^th in the final FedEx Cup wash-up.

Despite not making the finale Baddeley can be well pleased with a resurgent performance in 2016 after starting the year with only limited status.

He claimed his fourth career victory and earned almost $2 million to re-establish himself as a force on the world’s most competitive Tour.
