Eleven years after finishing second behind Craig Parry in the 2007 Australian Open, Won Joon Lee has equalled his best finish as a professional, finishing runner-up to Angelo Que in the TOP Cup Tokai Classic on the Japan Golf Tour.
Tied for seventh heading into the final round at Miyoshi Country Club in Aichi, Lee had five birdies on the back-9 in his bogey-free round of 66 to finish tied for second and win Y9,240,000 (approximately $112,000) in prizemoney, catapulting him up to 29th on the Order of Merit.
It’s Lee’s biggest payday since he won more than $125,000 for finishing a shot behind Parry at The Australian Golf Club more than a decade ago and continues the resurgence of one of Australia’s brightest junior talents.
Due to turn 33 later this month, Korean-born Lee played a total of just nine professional events in 2012 and 2013 and after a top-five finish at the RIZAP KBC Augusta tournament in August has now almost certainly wrapped up his card for 2019.
Two birdies in his final four holes saw Matthew Griffin end the week 7-under par and tied for 17th, his best result in four months, with Queensland’s Anthony Quayle a shot further back in a tie for 23rd to now sit 39th on the money list.
David Bransdon was the only other Australian to make the cut, rounds of 71-72-72-71 seeing him finish in a tie for 40th at 2-under par while New Zealand’s Michael Hendry shot 74 in the final round to finish 60th.
