Stepping off the plane in Queenstown is an awe inspiring
moment, especially when you do it for the first time.
This week Irish Rookie Professional Cormac Sharvin got to
experience it first hand when he arrived to play the BMW ISPS HANDA New Zealand
Open.
"It’s very animated, it’s like nothing I have ever seen
before, it’s doesn’t even look real. I can see why Lord of the Rings was filmed
here," said Sharvin.
"It’s definitely one of the most spectacular golf courses I
have ever played. With the mountains around the place and the rocks on the golf
course, it really is spectacular."
Singing the praises of The Hills after his practice round,
Sharvin is now looking forward to playing Millbrook Resort, the second host
venue for the tournament.
"I think it’s a very good golf course, very challenging.
There was a bit of breeze out there today, but it’s very fair. If you play well
you will shoot a good score," added Sharvin.
"From what I have heard about Millbrook the front-9 is
pretty straight forward and the back-9 gets a bit tricky."
"I’ll probably play the back and walk the front. You don’t
want to get too tired coming into Thursday, by the time Sunday comes you will
be drained."
This will be just the fourth time Sharvin will tee it up as
a Pro, his game showing good progress since he made his first cut at the ISPS
HANDA Perth International.
"Perth was a really good experience. I played really well
tee to green but really struggled on the greens," added Sharvin.
"They were like nothing I have ever putted on, lots of slope
and super quick. I let a few get away from me on the greens but overall it was
a really good week and I learned a lot from the experience."
"I think the greens this week are more what I am used to,
not quite as quick but really pure. I worked hard on my week off to get my
putting sorted and out there today it felt good so hopefully that works."
Sharvin hasn’t set himself a goal this week but has admitted
that continuing the tradition of a rookie champion at the BMW ISPS HANDA New
Zealand Open would be nice.
"Obviously it would be really nice to
pick up the trophy but it’s very early on in my professional career," continued
Sharvin.
"I just want to take things as they come, I don’t want to
get too caught up. But obviously if I get myself into position then I think
that I can win."
