The first round of the 2016 Coca Cola Rich River Trainee Classic teed off in perfect conditions yesterday. With the temperature sitting around 28 degrees – mild for the Moama region – and with very little wind great scores were the order of the day.

Spectators weren’t disappointed with early starter Adam Porker from Belconnen Golf Club (ACT) carding six birdies and a bogey to fire 5-under 67 and claim the first round lead.
Second Year Trainees Edward Tamsett and Ashley Munro of New South Wales showed early form with respectable scores of 2-under the card, leaving them tied for second place alongside third year Trainee Brody Martin from Western Australia.
Second Year Trainee Molly Lavercombe from New South Wales produced a solid performance, to shoot an even par round. Lavercombe is currently the leading female sitting T12 on the overall leaderboard and will be one to watch going into the second round.
Club members and Trainee Professionals alike were in form yesterday during the Rich River Trainee Pro-Am.
Trainee Professional Andrew Crabb (WA) and local Rich River member David Wilson both produced a hole-in-one during their rounds on the 3rd and 8th holes respectively.
Later in the evening, the big hitters where on show for the 2016 Doug Fraser Memorial Longest Drive Competition.
Patrick Joseph of Toukley Golf Club, New South Wales narrowly took out the title and the winner’s cheque provided by Ken Muston Automotive of $500 with a drive of 294.35 metres.
With unseasonably cooler conditions forecast for the second round, Trainees will look to take advantage to ensure they secure a position inside the cut.
Spectators will be hard set to pick a firm favourite with many of the first year Trainees predicted to shake off the nerves and find their stride alongside their seasoned competitors.
