Percy positioned to make splash in Bermuda

It’s a picturesque playground of the rich and famous and for Victorian Cameron Percy the inaugural Bermuda Championship presents an opportunity for a career-defining week.

The Australian contingent of Percy, John Senden, Rod Pampling, Robert Allenby, Rhein Gibson and Cameron Davis have already been swept up into the stunning vistas on display at Port Royal Golf Club but with world golf’s elite in China for the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament, a window is open.

Back on the PGA TOUR for the 2019-2020 season through the Korn Ferry Tour finals series, Percy plays his 141st tournament on America’s main circuit with top-11 finishes in two of his past three starts and 38th in the FedEx Cup.

At 45 years of age Percy doesn’t get caught up in trying to overpower golf courses, preferring to carefully dissect each layout with controlled precision.

Hitting 75 per cent of greens in regulation through four tournaments this season (27th on Tour), Percy’s approach will be well suited to the Royal Port course that plays along the spectacular coastline and which is exposed to the winds coming off the Atlantic Ocean.

Similar in style to Natadola Bay Golf Course, the former host of the Fiji International, Port Royal should suit the Aussies in the field and in particular Percy, who has twice finished inside the top five at the Australian Open and who two years ago was top 10 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Drawn to play with Senden in the opening two rounds and off in the first group of the day at 9.35pm AEDT Thursday evening, Percy will be hoping for calm conditions early and more challenging conditions for those in the afternoon groups.

Ryan Ruffels will endeavor to improve on his current position of 10th on the PGA TOUR-Latinoamerica series when he tees it up in the Termas de Rio Hondo Invitational in Argentina while David McKenzie is the lone Australian to qualify for the first event of the Champions Tour Charles Schwab Cup playoffs, the Invesco QQQ Championship at Sherwood Country Club in California.
