Cameron Percy’s first event on the Web.com Tour for 2016 has been a success, with the South Australian notching up a top-5 finish at the Rex Hospital Open.
Percy, who has limited status on the PGA TOUR this season, graduated from the secondary Tour two years ago but didn’t keep full playing privileges after the 2015 season.
One of three Australians with conditional PGA TOUR status to tee up this week, Percy was easily the best of the Down Under players and the only one to finish in red figures for the tournament.
Rounds of 72-65-70-67 got Percy to 10-under for the week, four behind tournament winner Trey Mullinax.
With 18 birdies and an eagle over the four days, Percy can take plenty of confidence from his performance as he tries to get back to the PGA TOUR full time.
Fellow PGA TOUR players Greg Chalmers and Rhein Gibson both missed the cut as did Mathew Goggin, Bryden Macpherson, Oliver Goss and Peter Lonard.
Steve Allan, Brett Drewitt and Scott Gardiner joined Percy in playing all four days with Allan the next best at T40.
The Web.com Tour veteran was solid with 15 birdies against 16 dropped shots over the 72 holes to be 1-over.
Brett Drewitt was two shots worse than Allan with scores of 73-69-71-74, a double bogey on his final hole of the tournament a disappointing way to finish.
Scott Gardiner was the last of the Australians to make the weekend, finishing T58 as he continues to make progress in his comeback from injury.
This was Gardiner’s third consecutive made cut and after almost two years of playing little competitive golf and an encouraging sign.
