Percy equals best PGA TOUR finish

Cameron Percy has matched his second-best finish on the PGA TOUR by finishing tied for seventh at the rain-affected Barbasol Championship in Kentucky won by American Troy Merritt.

""Torrential rain over the course of the tournament necessitated a Monday finish where Percy was positioned to push for his maiden PGA TOUR win, starting the final round two shots behind the 54-hole leaders.

A messy bogey at the par-4 third hole wasn’t the start the Victorian was hoping for but he bounced straight back with a birdie at the par-4 fourth and followed it with birdies at the sixth and seventh holes to begin his progression back up the leaderboard.

For the second round in succession a birdie at the 174-yard par-3 11th got him to 3-under on his round before a three-putt at the par-4 12th resulted in an untimely dropped shot.

A spectacular approach to the par-4 16th set up his fifth birdie of the day and ultimately a tie for seventh, equaling his second-best PGA TOUR finish at the John Deere Classic seven years ago and a cheque for just under $US110,000.

His best result coming in 2010 at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children when finished in a tie for second in a playoff.

Percy was the only Aussie to qualify for the weekend a the Barbasol Championship with Aaron Baddeley, Robert Allenby, Stuart Appleby, Peter Lonard and Steven Bowditch all failing to make the cut.

The 44-year-old now has a short turnaround to prepare for this week’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club where he will be joined by fellow Australians Aaron Baddeley, Matt Jones, Rod Pampling and John Senden.

On the Mackenzie Tour in Canada on the weekend a blistering opening round of 64 from Ruben Sondjaja couldn’t be maintained over the following 54 holes, a final round of 2-over 74 resulting in a tied 50th finish at the Osprey Valley Open won by Tyler McCumber who late last year earned a card for 2018 on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia through Q-School.
