The comeback which began at last year’s Australian open came full circle for Queensland’s Rod Pampling when he notched his first Web.com Tour victory at the BMW Charity Pro-am this week.
Pampling, a two time PGA TOUR winner who
has been desperately trying to earn back his status on the main circuit the
past two years, was flawless in amassing a 25-under-par total at the low
scoring event.
Long regarded as one of Australia’s best
ball strikers Pampling had struggled with his game in recent years but a solid
week at The Australian behind Jordan Spieth not only earned him a spot at this
year’s Open Championship but boosted his confidence as well.
Having rediscovered and studied video tape
of his swing of the mid 2000’s Pampling began striking the ball better and that
confidence has carried over into this year.
The win moves Pampling to eighth on the
money list where he joins Steve Allan, Mathew Goggin and Rhein Gibson in the
top-25.
While Pampling was unstoppable for the week
he wasn’t the only Australian to post a much needed good result.
Bronson La’Cassie recorded easily his best
finish for the year with a T4 while Alistair Presnell, who hadn’t made a cut in
six starts heading into the week, finished in a share of 14th to
cash his first cheque for 2015.
James Nitties (T26), Steve Allan (T34),
Greg Chalmers (T48) and Nick Flanagan (T64) were the other Australians to make
the 54-hole cut.
Missing the weekend were Adam Crawford,
Aron Price, Oliver Goss, Mathew Goggin, Scott Gardiner, Ash Hall, Rhein Gibson
and Bryden Macpherson.
