Ormsby ignites to co-lead KLM Open

A hot streak on the back 9 at the KLM Open has seen Wade Ormsby finish the first round tied for the lead with Paul Lawrie.

A hot streak on the back 9 at the KLM Open has seen Wade Ormsby finish the first round tied for the lead with Paul Lawrie.

"WadePlaying in
his first tournament since the start of August, Ormsby played some solid golf
on the front nine going through the turn bogey free on 3-under the card.

But it was
on the back 9 that Ormsby’s round really ignited, the South Australian
producing a stunning finish with six birdies in his last seven holes including
three in a row to close his round.

"I had a
hot putter there at the end, which made things a bit easier," said Ormsby who
believes he left a few birdies out on the course.

"I was
getting a bit frustrated as I was hitting it really close but not holing
anything, but I kept on giving myself good chances on the right side and
eventually they started rolling in."

"That’s the
lowest score I’ve had in any round, let alone tournament golf."

Ormsby had
a breakthrough year on the European Tour in 2014 but has been struggling to
find that same consistency on Tour this year.

But
returning to tournament golf refreshed, after an extended break at home working
on his game, has paid dividends for the South Australian who is currently 100th
on the Race to Dubai standings.

"I’ve
worked pretty hard the last few weeks. I’ve had five weeks off back in
Australia and it’s nice to get back and on the front foot," added Ormsby.

"My form
was very ordinary during that long run in the middle of the year and I was
hanging on, not getting any results."

"So I went
back to Oz with my son and practised hard for the last three weeks and it’s
paying off. I put a new putter in the bag this week as well and that’s
definitely working."

Also looking
to have benefitted from an extended break from the European Tour is Scott Hend.
The Queenslander fired 5-under 65 in his opening round to be T12.

Richard
Green is the next best of the Aussies on 3-under the card and T26 with Jason
Scrivener a shot further back and T43.

Daniel
Gaunt rounds out the Australian contingent on the European Tour this week and
is T85 on even par after the first round of the KLM Open.
