Danish star Thorbjorn Olesen finds himself in new territory
this week as he prepares to defend his ISPS Handa Perth International title.
This is the first time in Olesen’s career that he will
defend a title and the 26-year-old is feeling the pressure.
"I’ve never
tried it before, so I don’t really know how it’s going to feel on Thursday," said
Olesen.
"But I’ve
been looking forward to this tournament and looking forward to defending. So, hopefully it will be a good week."
"I think it
puts more pressure on you, but it’s also nice to go out there and know you can
win on this golf course."
Also on his mind is the prospect of competing in The
Masters, Olympics and Ryder Cup, a good performance this week could go a long
way to making all this possible.
"The main
goal is to get back in that Top‑50, be in all the Majors and the WGCs. It makes
it a lot more fun to be in all those tournaments," added Olesen.
"It was a
step in the right direction, with a couple of good weeks there in the Middle
East. This week could help me a lot, also, if I can have a strong week."
"I think I’m in the team, so obviously I need to be in all
the big tournaments to really compete in the spots for The Ryder Cup, it’s
definitely a goal. The Olympics, also;
it’s definitely two things I want."
After missing the cut at the Maybank Championship last week,
Thorbjorn was happy to be back in Australia with the good memories from his win
flooding back.
"I love it here in Perth. I’m really looking forward to this
week, and looking forward to reminding myself of all the good memories on this
golf course," continued Olesen.
"It’s a great
golf course. I think you really need to
hit some great shots on this course. It
can be really tricky."
Standing in Olesen’s way of back-to-back ISPS Handa Perth
International titles is a strong field including 2014 runner-up Victor
Dubuisson and World Number 21 Louis Oosthuizen, as well as local hope Brett
Rumford.
"This year, we have some great players. There are so many
players that can win. You see that every week on The European Tour," added
Olesen.
"You’ve got to play some great golf and you’ve got to hole
the putts to be up there in contention."
"It’s always
difficult, but it’s nice for me to know that I played well in this golf course
and I really enjoy it."
