Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy is hoping that Kiwi star Ryan Fox can be part of the International team to contest the Presidents Cup at the end of the year.

"RyanOgilvy, who is playing in the 100th New Zealand Open in Queenstown starting on Thursday, is one of the captains assistants for the International team under Ernie Els.

The Australian, who won the US Open in 2006, said Fox had improved his chances of selection with his breakthrough victory in the European Tour, ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and Asian Tour tri-sanctioned event in Perth recently.

Fox’s win pushed him up to 64th on the world rankings to receive a late call-up for the World Golf Championship – Mexico Championship, arriving on the eve of the competition where he finished in a share of 67th place, earning NZD $70,000 for his efforts.

He is due to arrive in Queenstown on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the New Zealand Open.

Ogilvy said Fox is definitely on their radar for the Presidents Cup which will be played at Royal Melbourne in December against the United States.

“Ernie (Els) and I and others involved get emails every Monday and discuss all the internationals and how they are playing,” said Ogilvy.

“Ryan is in that conversation with 20 or 30 guys and he moved much more into the conversation with his win in Perth.

“It would be great for Ryan to be involved in the Presidents Cup. Being played down here, it would be brilliant to have it full of Kiwis and Aussies. Ryan is on the radar for sure.”
