While he came up short of qualifying for the FedEx Cup playoffs, Geoff Ogilvy will take plenty of positives from his finish to the season after claiming top Australian honours at the Wyndham Championship.

""The 2006 US Open winner carded a final round 66 at the Sedgefield Country Club to get to 10-under for the week and T22.

It was Ogilvy’s second top-25 of the season after a difficult start which saw him miss 13 cuts from 21 starts.

The Victorian eventually finished 161st on the FedEx Cup standings and will miss the playoff events.

Reigning Australian Open champion Matt Jones was the hard luck story among the Australians after slipping from 124th on the standings to 126th to miss the playoffs by a single spot.

Jones missed the cut in North Carolina meaning his fate was out of his hands and his season ended.

Despite capturing his first tournament win in 2016 Greg Chalmers also missed qualifying for the playoff events, the left hander finishing 143nd on the standings.

Playing on limited status for much of the season Chalmers will be disappointed not to be playing the end of year events but with the luxury of a two year exemption courtesy of his win he will be satisfied with his 2016.

Four Australians have qualified for next week’s Barclays tournament, Jason Day and Adam Scott both in the top-10 while Marc Leishman (55) and John Senden (93) will also tee up.

125 Professionals will take to the course next week with the field reduced to the top-100 for the following week’s Deutsche Bank Championship then 70 for the BMW Championship.

Only the top-30 advance to the final event of the season, the TOUR Championship, in late September.

Chalmers, Cameron Percy and Rhein Gibson were the three remaining Australians to make the cut at the Wyndham with Stuart Appleby, Cameron Smith, Robert Allenby, Rod Pampling Jarrod Lyle and Steven Bowditch all joining Matt Jones with the weekend off.
