This week was to be without a tournament on the 2015 Web.com schedule until a last minute announcement in April that the Greater Dallas Open would be played in Texas.
The new event kicks off the second half of
the Web.com regular season and with a new event comes new hope for several
Australian golfers struggling for form on America’s secondary circuit.
While Mathew Goggin, Rod Pampling and Steve
Allan are all comfortably inside the top-25 on the money list several of the 14
Australians playing the Tour this year are languishing.
Rookie Rhein Gibson fell out of the top-25
after missing the cut last week (he is now 30th) while there are no
other Australians in the top -50.
Oliver Goss is next best at 52 with Bronson
La’Cassie (60) and Brett Drewitt (66) the only others in the top 75. Aron Price
(86) and Alistair Presnell (T96) rounding out those in the top-100.
For James Nitties (101), Ash Hall (121),
Adam Crawford (123), Bryden Macpherson (157) and Nick Flanagan (191) the
situation is grim and a new event on an unknown course might be just the tonic
to get things moving in the right direction.
All can look to the turnaround in form of
Alistair Presnell in recent weeks who has gone from missing seven straight cuts
at the start of the season to back-to-back top-20 results.
Bronson La’Cassie has also shown glimpses
of form in recent weeks, his T4 behind Rod Pampling at the BMW Charity event
three weeks ago the highlight of an otherwise indifferent year.
Rookie Oliver Goss has shown his enormous
potential on more than one occasion in 2015 but inconsistency and big numbers
have been his downfall.
Opening rounds of 65-74 at last week’s Rex
Hospital Open are a prime example of the swings in his game which have proved
costly in his first year as a Professional but he is too gifted a player not to
get that under control and advance to the next level.
Fellow Web.com rookie Brett Drewitt began
the year well enough but is in the midst of a run of three straight missed cuts
and will be looking to get back on track this week.
