James Marchesani has survived Monday qualifying and will join 14 other Australians in the field at this week’s Air Capital Classic on the Web.com Tour.
Marchesani, who was a standout amateur at
Oklahoma University not far from the site of this week’s tournament, claimed
the last of six places with a 2-under 70 at Auburn Hills GC in Kansas.
Marchesani is no stranger to pre-qualifying
as a Professional having successfully navigated the gruelling process three
times over the Australian summer on the PGA Tour of Australasia at the
Australian Masters, Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship.
Marchesani’s late inclusion means 15
Australians will now tee up at this week’s event with
10 of them sharing tee times for the first two rounds.
Rod Pampling and Mathew Goggin are out in
the first group on Thursday while Ash Hall will join Steve Allan, Nick Flanagan
will play with Alistair Presnell, James Nitties and Rhein Gibson play together
and Aron Price and Adam Crawford share an afternoon tee time.
Also in the field this week are Bronson
La’Cassie, Brett Drewitt, Bryden Macpherson and Oliver Goss.
With the halfway mark of the season now
passed just four Australians are inside the top-50 on the money list and only
two remain in the top-25 who are guaranteed PGA TOUR cards for next season.
Winners Rod Pampling and Mathew Goggin are
11th and 18th respectively while Steve Allan is in good
shape at 26th.
Rhein Gibson is the last of the Australians
in the top 50 at 38th with rookie Oliver Goss next best in 59th
after a mix of both good and bad results in his first season.
Bronson La’Cassie (64th), Brett Drewitt (71st)
James Nitties (75th) and Aron Price (94th) are inside the
top-100 while Alistair Presnell, Ash Hall, Nick Flanagan, Bryden Macpherson and
Adam Crawford all have work to do to retain status on the Web.com Tour for next
year.
