Macpherson fires in China

A blistering final round 64 has seen Bryden Macpherson claim his third victory in China after starting the final round of the Fragrant Hills Beijing Open six shots out of the lead.

A blistering final round 64 has seen Bryden Macpherson claim his third victory in China after starting the final round of the Fragrant Hills Beijing Open six shots out of the lead.

""Macpherson, who won twice in 2015 on what was then the PGA TOUR China, forced a playoff with his scintillating play before capturing the title on the third extra hole.

A par at the par-3 17th proved enough for Macpherson to overcome Korea’s Rak Hyun Cho after both players found a bunker off the tee.

This was the second event on the schedule for the Tour which is now being run by the China Golf Association, Cho winning the first event with Macpherson T2 before reversing the order this week.

“I didn’t think I would have any chance of catching any of the leaders at the start of the day and I guess I was lucky enough to be at the right position at the right time,” Macpherson told the Tour’s website after the round.

“I haven’t been making many putts during the week but I managed to hole many putts today and played really solid.

“I told myself to stay patient as you never know what can happen. And then, here we are. I was trying not to think too much of the scores when I played but I thought if I could get to eight or nine-under-par, I may have a chance.”

In the end 7-under was the number, Macpherson’s bogey free round proving enough.

Victoria’s Deyen Lawson was also in fine form finishing one shot out of the playoff after being in the mix all week.

Lawson entered the final round with a share of the lead and was 4-under through 10 holes before dropping five shots in a seven hole stretch to fall back.

A birdie at the 18th saw him finish even par for the day and while no doubt disappointed has shown good form finishing sixth in the first event of the season and now T3.

“I need to work on a few things and revaluate where I’m at in my game,” Lawson said after the round.

“It’s all a learning process and hopefully I can get the job done soon.”

Max McCardle also finished inside the top-10 after a final round of 1-under 70 took him to 11-under and T6, three shots out of the playoff.

Jack Munro (T15) was next best with Maverick Antcliff and Christopher Wood (T20) also in the top-20.

Mitchell Brown finished 5-under for the week and T26 with Kevin Yuan, Austin Batista and Peter Martin all 3-under and T33.

Corey Hale was 2-under and T39 with Gavin Flint (T49) the last of the Australians to make the cut.

Lincoln Tighe, James Gibellini and Jichul Jung all missed the weekend while Taylor Cooper was disqualified.
