With just two starts left on a major medical extension as he tries to earn back his PGA TOUR rights, Jarrod Lyle will be looking for a big performance at this week’s John Deere Classic.
Lyle made a respectable 10 birdies in two rounds at the Web.com Tour’s Digital Ally Open last week but a 4-under total through 36 holes wasn’t enough to make the cut in a low scoring event.
However, the 34-year-old will be looking to take the positives from that performance and eliminate costly errors at TPC Deere Run this week as he continues his comeback from a second bout of leukemia.
Lyle needs to earn just over $200,000 to be back playing the TOUR full time otherwise a minimum of $28,561 to be eligible for the Web.com Tour playoffs.
Lyle is one of 13 Australians to tee up this week, former PGA TOUR members Gavin Coles and Mark Hensby also earning places in the field.
Coles survived Monday qualifying for the tournament while Hensby is a former winner of the event having taken the title in 2004.
Also playing this week are Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby, Cameron Smith, Rod Pampling, Cameron Percy, Steven Bowditch, Robert Allenby, John Senden, Matt Jones and Rhein Gibson.
Gibson has been in good form in recent weeks on the secondary Web.com Tour and at 200th on the FedEx Cup standings in his rookie season needs something special in the next fortnight to guarantee a card for 2017.
Having moved inside the top-35 on the Web.com standings, Gibson is assured a place in the upcoming Finals Series which relieves some of the pressure of his PGA TOUR performances over the next two weeks.
That freedom could work in his favour as he tees up at TPC Deere Run for the first time, the low scoring seen historically at the course is an ideal fit for his style of play.
Also in need of a good result this week is Matt Jones who presently sits 126th on the FedEx Cup with just two tournaments to go before the playoffs.
Jones, Stuart Appleby, Cameron Percy, Cameron Smith and Rod Pampling are all placed between 125 and 200 on the list and will gain access to the Web.com Finals Series.
