Lyle leads Aussies into new season

Jarrod Lyle will tee up in a PGA TOUR event for the firsttime since February 2012 this week after he and Mathew Goggin survived an eightman play-off to earn a spot in the Fry’s.com Open, the first event of the2014/15 PGA TOUR season.

Jarrod Lyle will tee up in a PGA TOUR event for the firsttime since February 2012 this week after he and Mathew Goggin survived an eightman play-off to earn a spot in the Fry’s.com Open, the first event of the2014/15 PGA TOUR season.

Lyle, who had been hoping for a sponsor’s invite that didn’t eventuate, shot 66 in a Monday qualifier to be one of eight players in a play-off for four spots.

The 32 year-old is returning to the PGA TOUR on a major medical extension after beating leukemia for a second time but with limited status, and only 19 events to earn the US$283,825 required to keep his card, every tournament counts.

He has been assured a sponsor’s invite to next week’s Shriner’s Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas but will need to rely heavily on other invites to get starts this year.

Unfortunately missed out on an invite to the http://t.co/MDvaw1I9kl tournament. Going to Monday qualifier to get in that way.

Lyle told AAP’s Ben Everill that while he was disappointed not to be extended an invitation this week he was more upset at not being told his request had been denied.

"I was disappointed not to get an invite, mostly because they didn’t even let me know," he said.

"We just had to wait until the field was finalised on Friday. I understand invites are hard to get and plenty of worthy players want them but it was a shame they didn’t at least let us know."

Lyle will now be in the first group out to begin the new season having drawn the 7.15am tee time for Thursday’s first round. He may well hit the first shot of 2014/15.

There are nine Australians in this week’s field including fellow Monday qualifier Mathew Goggin and 2014 Web.com Tour graduate Cameron Percy.

Percy is embarking on his third full season on the main Tour having qualified in both 2010 and 2013 and having limited status in 2012.

The 40-year-old was the only Australian to earn a card via the secondary Tour this year and says he is confident he will perform better than his previous two appearances.

"I feel ready and this time around I have some extra confidence after winning on the Web.com Tour this year," Percy told AAP.

"I have also got a new caddy who has been out here for years and years and he keeps me a lot calmer."

"In the past I maybe would dwell on some bad breaks too long but I am a lot calmer in dealing with these things."

Other Australians getting an early start to the 2014/15 season this week are Stuart Appleby, Matt Jones, Robert Allenby, Marc Leishman, Steven Bowditch and Aaron Baddeley.

None have particularly good records at this event with Mathew Goggin’s 3rd place in 2008 the only top-10 finish for any of the Australians dating back to 2007.
