West Australian Amateur Curtis Luck continues his
preparations for Augusta National this week at the Australian PGA Championship.
Luck, who won the WA Open, U.S. Amateur and Asia-Pacific
Amateur this year, will play the first two rounds of the Australian PGA
Championship alongside Australia’s first Masters Champion; Adam Scott.
This continues a great run of pairings for the 21-year-old
who played alongside another Masters Champion; Jordan Spieth at the Emirates
Australian Open.
Not at all awe struck by the calibre of golfer he is
spending time with, Luck is focused on his preparations just like the stars he
plays alongside.
"Adam Scott has been kind of an
Aussie idol I guess for me since I started, growing up playing golf, to be
playing with him this week it’s extremely exciting and I’m obviously very fortunate," said Luck.
"I’m a believer in I’ll
let Adam do his business and then we’ll have a bit of a
chat, obviously hopefully on the course, maybe even be able to get some lunch
at some point during the week.
"I haven’t
bothered to go and interfere when he’s practicing and
stuff, because I understand that this is a business week for him, just like it
is me, so I’ll give him his time but I’m sure we’ll
have a good time on Thursday."
While Luck may have already had a career defining year, a win at the
Australian PGA Championship opens up even more opportunities; an exemption onto
the European Tour for two years.
"It’s such an amazing opportunity for anyone in the
field this week. To be able to come away this week with a win and obviously
have a Tour card for the following year would simplify my life a lot, it’s
a great kick-start to your career as a Professional," said Luck,
"I’m
pretty close to deciding that I’ll
turn Pro most likely after the Masters next year."
However before he
starts dreaming of the Masters and a European Tour career, Luck needs to
overcome the Graham Marsh re-design RACV Royal Pines Resort layout.
"We teed off really early
yesterday and played 18 holes. It’s good. You can see where
Graham Marsh has tried to add some elevation into a course that’s
obviously very flat, round the greens in particular it’s a little funky," added Luck.
"I think for me this week it’s
probably a good thing that it’s nice and tight
around the greens.
"Coming from Perth we don’t
get to play on this sort of style of grass that often, so the fact that it’s
fairway around the green I think is a good advantage for me."
The Australian PGA Championship tees off on
Thursday with Adam Scott, Ian Poulter, Marc Leishman, Marcus Fraser, Scott
Hend, Danny Lee and defending champion Nathan Holman all in action.
