It’s a big week for Sam Lee competing on his home course in the Fiji International which also features his childhood idol.
25-year-old Lee is competing in the Fiji International for the second time, but this year it’s all a little bit different, this year he is playing as a Professional.
"Last year I wanted to play well and make the cut and I didn’t. This year I am trying to play a little bit freer and not put too much pressure on myself," said Lee.
"A little more prepared than last year too. I have been playing the course for almost over a year now."
With almost a year’s experience competing on the PGA Tour of Australasia under his belt, Lee believes he will be more equipped to handle the pressures of tournament golf.
"Obviously this is my first year as a Pro so I am just getting used to playing Tour events so I think I am a little more relaxed now especially playing at home," added Lee who will need to call on his local knowledge to combat the 60km/h winds hitting the course.
"I have been playing the course the last few weeks and it has been windy. It’s a sea breeze so the wind is a little bit heavier and there are elevation changes on the course."
"Unless you play the course quite a lot you don’t expect the wind to have that much effect on the golf ball. So I think this will give me a little bit of an advantage."
Hoping for a dream week at the Fiji International this year, Lee has high hopes of a tee time with his hero Vijay Singh.
"Vijay was Number 1 in the world in 2004 and I only started playing golf in 2003, back then I didn’t know much, but obviously Vijay Singh is from Fiji and he was Number 1 in the world."
"Now I get to meet him and hopefully play with him too, it’s exciting to think about."
"Playing in the same tournament as Vijay is fun. It’s unbelievable really. To see him out here for how great he is."
The Fiji International will be played at Natadola Bay Championship Golf from 15-18 October.
