Ryan McCarthy has capped off a brilliant recent run with a career best European Tour result at the Porsche European Open in Germany.

After receiving a sponsor’s invitation to the event, the 27-year-old posted rounds of 70-69-68-75 to finish T19, improving on his T23 result at the Lyoness Open in June.

McCarthy began the final round in a share of fourth and just three shots off the pace and could hardly have made a better start than a birdie at the first.

He gave the shot back at the fourth but was still in good position heading to the turn at even par for the day and 9-under for the tournament.

However, things went awry on the back nine where he started with a bogey then followed with a double at the par-5 11^th.

Despite the shock of dropping three shots in quick succession, McCarthy showed great determination to birdie the 12^th and hit back again after another double bogey at the 14^th.

He will be disappointed to have gone backwards in the final round but the result capped off a confidence boosting run for the Tasmanian who will return to the Challenge Tour in good form.

After qualifying for his first major at last week’s Open Championship his performance this week will only have added to his self-belief as he heads to the second half of the Challenge Tour season hoping to play his way to the European Tour.

McCarthy was one of seven Australians to begin the week but only he and Dimi Papadatos survived the 36-hole cut.

Papadatos posted scores of 71-72-73-73 to be 1-over for the week and T60.

Terry Pilkadaris, Ash Hall, Daniel Fox, Richard Green and Nathan Holman all missed the cut.
