Huntingdale Golf Club is a course which requires precision
and knowledge to be tamed which is a far cry from some of the modern courses
which lend themselves to the big hitters.
There was no better evidence of this that at the 2015 UNIQLO
Masters, where at the age of 56, fan favourite Peter Senior took out the title.
Today the PGA Tour of Australasia returned to the sandbelt
layout for the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Truck and Bus Victorian PGA
Championship and the wise heads in the game have once again risen to the top of
the leaderboard.
A former Huntingdale member Ashley Hall handed in an
impressive 6-under 66 utilising his vast course knowledge to his advantage. His
round was blemish free until a bogey on the 18th after he drove his
ball almost onto the practice fairway.
David McKenzie tied Hall for the lead with what he described
as a boring round. However bogey free and 6-under is an ideal start for the
48-year-old Victorian.
Getting his day off to a good start was Michael Sim who
eagled his opening hole, the par-5 10th. He finished his round on
5-under 67.
A further shot back is a group of seven players including
the experienced Peter O’Malley and Stephen Leaney, the in-form Matthew Millar
and defending champion Aaron Townsend.
The afternoon field is now on course with Taylor
Macdonald the low man on course. He is 5-under after 12 holes.
