A stirring final round 67 by Brad Kennedy
lifted the Queenslander to a share of third place at the Japan Tour’s ISPS
Handa Global Cup at the weekend, just one of three Australasians to finish in
the top-5 at the prestigious event.
Kennedy’s four round total of 15-under was
two shots shy of a playoff between PGA TOUR player Emiliano Grillo and Korea’s
Jun-Won Park while both amateur Curtis Luck and New Zealand’s Michael Hendry
were even more impressive Sunday.
Luck opened his round with an eagle at the
par-5 1st and added five more birdies in an equal best round of the day 64, the
7-under score taking him to 13-under for the week and T5.
Hendry finished at the same total after a
Sunday 65, his round consisting of two halves of 3-under with no blemishes on
his card.
The T3 result was Kennedy’s second top-5 of
the season and third top-10 in his last four starts as he continues to be one
of the Japan Tour’s most consistent performers.
He has missed just one cut in eight starts
this season and sits just outside the top-10 on the Order of Merit with a
little over AU$215,000.
Hendry is the highest earner of the
Australasians so far this season, the one-time Tour winner seventh on the Order
of Merit with more than AU$315,000 in earnings.
That trio were among 12 Australians to make
the cut in the tournament, invitees Matt Millar (T33), Jarrod Lyle (T47) and
Ash Hall (T51) among them.
Japan Tour regulars Won Joon Lee (T17),
Brendan Jones (T23), Adam Bland (T37), Matt Griffin (T43) and Scott Strange
(T51) were the others to survive to the weekend.
Michael Long, David Smail, Aaron Townsend
and Deyen Lawson all failed to qualify for the final two rounds.
