Brad Kennedy continues to play his way into form ahead of some of the biggest events of the Japan season, the Queenslander again top Australian at this week’s PGM Championship near Tokyo.
Kennedy was T22 this week, a good performance after an opening round of 3-over-par set him well back with three rounds to go.
Rounds of 69-66 on Friday and Saturday got Kennedy back into the tournament and while never in genuine contention it was a disciplined effort after a disappointing start.
While Kennedy struggled in the opening round rookie Won Joon Lee was the opposite, a 5-under-65 on Thursday seeing him in a share of fourth through 18 holes.
After his best finish of the year when T2 a fortnight ago,Lee would have hoped to go on with the job but lost momentum with rounds of 72-75 to fall to 2-over heading into Sunday’s final round.
An even par score in the final round saw him eventually finish mid-field but his first 18 holes show his game isn’t far away.
It was a lackluster week for the Australasian contingent in Japan, Adam Bland one shot behind Kennedy and T27 with a further shot back to Matt Griffin at T30.
Kurt Barnes was T34 and last of the Australasians to make the cut, David Smail, Michael Hendry and Brendan Jones all missing the weekend’s play.
With a run of the Japan Tour’s most prestigious tournaments beginning with this week’s Visa Taiheyo Masters the Australasians will be looking to turn things around quickly.
