It took until the final day of the Web.com Tour season for Matt Jones to wrap up his 2018 PGA Tour but the New South Welshman can avoid similar stress after a strong start to the finals.
Although disappointed with a final round of even-par 72, a top-10 finish at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship last week has Jones well positioned to claim one of 25 PGA Tour cards up for grabs at the conclusion of the Tour Championship.
It was the site of this week’s tournament, the DAP Championship at Canterbury Golf Club in Beechwood, Ohio, that ignited Jones’s finals run last year, a tie for 20th providing the momentum to finish fifth at the Tour Championship and reclaim his PGA Tour status.
Jones is one of four Australians currently inside the top 25 cut-off in the Web.com Tour Finals moneylist after strong starts by both Cameron Davis and Curtis Luck.
Rediscovering the type of form that earned Davis a win earlier in the season, Davis was tied for third last week while Luck recorded his second top-10 finish in as many weeks.
The West Australian was close to missing the finals altogether until he was tied for sixth at the WinCo Foods Portland Open and then backed that up at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to sit fifth with three remaining events in the Web.Com Tour Finals.
PGA Tour veteran Aaron Baddeley also sits within the top 25 after one event but will no doubt feel the pressure rising sitting in 22nd position.
Baddeley just missed retaining his PGA Tour card after a courageous performance in the final regular season event to be tied for 24th at the Wyndham Championship and will be hoping that his historically trusty putter will catch fire in the final three finals events.
Aussies seeking to improve their standings at the DAP Championship are Rhein Gibson, Stuart Appleby, Cameron Percy, Brett Drewitt and John Senden.
