PGA Trainees have arrived at Coral Cove for the 2015 Bundaberg Motor Group Queensland PGA Trainee Championship and full of motivation on the back of Jason Day win at The Barclays morning.
Now in its fifth year at Coral Cove Golf Club, the tournament is one of the highlights of the year for the next wave of PGA Professionals, with 67 Trainees hoping to aloft the Carnegie Clark Cup and a share in the $35,000 prize purse.
One interstate player to watch this week is defending champion Deyen Lawson who won last’s year tournament by four shots.
"2014 was by far my most successful as a professional and I am really pleased to be back to defend my title at Coral Cove. I really enjoy the golf course, it rewards the player who drives it straight and hopefully I can do that this week," said Lawson.
The strongest Queensland contenders include 2014 Queensland Trainee of the Year Rick Coleman as well as Ali Orchard who, after winning the Pampling Plate earlier this year, is looking to be the first female to win the tournament and one of the few PGA Trainees to win both the state match play and championship titles in the same year.
"It would be a real honour to be able to say that I am the first female to win this event though there are plenty of good players here this week, both male and female, that are also looking to do so and therefore all I can do is give myself a chance come the back nine on Friday and see what happens," said Orchard.
The Coral Cove community will look to Caboolture Golf Club Trainee Ryan Norton who hails from the Bundaberg area and is looking to improve on his 21st position in 2014.
"It is great to be home to see friends and family though my primary focus is to give myself a chance to win our State Championship. I know the course better than most of the other professionals. If I can execute my game plan, I would like to think I will have every chance to take out the title," said Norton.
The unique par 6, 12th hole at Coral Cove has already created interest amongst competitors and will play a significant part later in the week as to who climbs the leaderboard along with the other signature hole at Coral Cove Golf Club, the 203m par 3 2nd hole.
Not only will trainee professionals be competing in the tournament, they will also be looking to leave their mark on the region by conducting a number of community activities throughout the week.
A free ladies clinic will run on Tuesday at 3pm, as well as a free junior clinic on Wednesday at 3pm which will provide the ability to create more awareness of the game of golf in the local area.
The first round will commence tomorrow morning at 7:00am in what is predicted to be sunny and calm conditions.
Spectators are welcome to attend and witness the next generation of PGA Professionals tee it up.
