High stakes for Aussies at Web.com finale

It’s the last throw of the dice for four of the seven Australians in this week’s Web.com Tour Championship as the final 25 cards for the 2017 PGA TOUR will be handed out Sunday.

""Cameron Smith, Brett Drewitt and Rod Pampling have all safely secured places on the big stage next year but Cameron Percy, Stuart Appleby, Rhein Gibson and Matt Jones have everything on the line this week.

Percy sits 24th on the Finals Series money list but likely needs at least a mid-field finish at the Atlantic Beach Country Club to book a ticket back to the main Tour in 2017.

For Appleby, Gibson and Jones, the task is much tougher.

Nine-time TOUR winner Appleby is 33rd on the money list and likely needs at least a top-10 finish to climb into reckoning while Gibson at 45th and Jones at 85th likely need a top three result.

For the three who have already earned their cards the Web.com Tour Championship is about climbing as high on the priority list as possible.

The 25 cards awarded Sunday will alternate on the priority ranking list for tournament starts with the 25 handed out at the end of the regular season.

The simple equation is that the higher up the final list you can get; the more tournament starts you will be eligible for.

Smith is currently the best of the Australians at third while Pampling’s solid play in the Finals Series sees him 11th.

Brett Drewitt’s T5 finish at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital event a fortnight ago has him 16th on the list and the last of the Australians guaranteed a card for the season.
