Rhein Gibson has been at less than his best for much of the 2017 Web.com Tour season but this week’s Air Capital Classic in Kansas might just be the week that turns things around.
The 31-year-old is one of seven Australians teeing up at the Crestview Country Club, a course where he finished T3 in 2015 on his way to earning a 2016 PGA TOUR card.
Gibson is yet to post a top-10 in 2017 and comes to Kansas off the back of a missed cut last week in Illinois but he showed glimpses of form in the three events prior.
Two top-25 results in three starts point to a game heading in the right direction and Gibson will be keen to continue the trend this week.
Also teeing up in Kansas are Brett Drewitt, Steve Allan, Peter Lonard, Robert Allenby, Mark Hensby and Jamie Arnold.
Arnold has been the standout among the Australians recently, highlighted by his T4 finish last week which saw him move to 52nd on the money list.
Playing his rookie year in America, Arnold appears to have settled into life on the Web.com Tour and after a difficult start is beginning to play some good golf.
He is now the highest ranked Australian on the money list and another good showing in Kansas will go a long way towards securing top-25 status and a ticket to the big leagues next year.
Arnold’s final round heroics last week leapfrogged him over Mark Hensby for top Australian honours and while Hensby will be displeased with his Sunday play he will also bring some positives from Illinois.
His opening 66 was an impressive round of golf and he showed determination in the second and third rounds to sign for even par scores when things weren’t going his way.
A former winner on the PGA TOUR and a Presidents Cup player, Hensby is no stranger to the big stage and will continue his quest to get back there unfazed by setbacks such as Sunday last week.
With the season rapidly approaching its halfway stage there is a sense of urgency beginning to develop for the remaining Web.com regulars with Steve Allan and Robert Allenby languishing outside the top-90 on the money list.
Peter Lonard is outside the top-100 but is playing the secondary Tour in 2017 mostly in preparation for a tilt at the Champions Tour so will be less concerned about his potential 2018 status.
