Rhein Gibson has joined Steve Allan as the two Australians with the best chance to graduate to the 2016 PGA TOUR with one event remaining in the Web.com Finals Series.
A T9 finish for Gibson at this week’s
penultimate tournament has jumped him to 18th on the mini money list
being conducted over the four events, the top-25 to be awarded cards after next
week’s Web.com Tour Championship. Allan is 23rd in the standings.
Gibson was the standout performer at the
Nationwide Children’s Hospital tournament with Allan (T29), Oliver Goss (T35),
Rod Pampling (T56) and Greg Chalmers (T61) the only others to make the cut.
Mathew Goggin, Cameron Percy and Aaron
Baddeley all missed the weekend while Stuart Appleby withdrew after an opening
round 79 and Robert Allenby didn’t take his place in the field.
Estimates suggest it will take around
$40,000 to ensure a 2016 card for the main Tour, Allan currently sitting on
$29, 402 and Gibson on $33,942.
There will be no shortage of pressure on
the pair at TPC Sawgrass’ Dye Valley course next week with just four rounds
standing between them and golf’s ultimate prize.
While Allan and Gibson find themselves at
the pointy end of the race for a card the equation is simple for the rest of
the Australian contingent.
Oliver Goss is next best on the money list
at 40th and with $15,387 in earnings likely needs to finish inside
the top-10 next week to have any chance of graduating.
For those further down, such as Aaron
Baddeley and Cameron Percy who are both T67 on the list with $5,855, a top-5 is
their only realistic hope.
Greg Chalmers at T74 and Mathew Goggin at
78 are in similar circumstances while it’s unknown if Stuart Appleby or Robert
Allenby will play this week.
Allenby has a once only career money list
exemption to fall back on while Appleby will play 2016 on a major medical
extension but will likely need to rely on invites for starts if he fails to
qualify in the 25.
