Gibson one to watch in Panama

A final round 66 at last week’s Web.com Tour event in Colombia will have Rhein Gibson eager to get started at the week’s Panama Claro Championship where he finished T6 last year.

A final round 66 at last week’s Web.com Tour event in Colombia will have Rhein Gibson eager to get started at the week’s Panama Claro Championship where he finished T6 last year.

""Gibson, who spent 2016 playing the PGA TOUR after a successful 2015 campaign on the secondary circuit, has been steady but unspectacular early in 2017 but playing a familiar layout may be just the tonic to kick start his year.

The 31-year-old is capable of bursts of extremely low scoring and but for an opening 75 last year may have contended for the title.

Gibson produced scores of 64-71-66 to finish his week and will be drawing on those good memories this week.

Also teeing up in Panama are Steve Allan, Peter Lonard, Jamie Arnold and Mark Hensby.

Hensby continues his attempt to get back to becoming a full time player after a serious car accident derailed what was a promising career in the mid 2000’s.

Hensby is a former PGA TOUR winner and Presidents Cup player and produced some promising golf on his way to a T25 finish last week.

A second round 66 had him inside the top-10 heading to the weekend and while he eventually faded with scores of 70-71 will take some confidence into this week’s event.

Allan has had limited success at this event in three previous appearnaces, a T8 his best in 2014.

Peter Lonard has an even rockier relationship with the Panama Golf Club boasting four missed cuts and a T7 on his resume since 2011.

Jamie Arnold tees up in the tournament for the first time having secured his Web.com card at last year’s Q School but comes into the week off a missed cut in Colombia.
