Gibson just shy in Oregon

Rhein Gibson put up a brave fight but came up just short of earning a 2017 PGA TOUR card at the final full field event of the Web.com season in Oregon.

""Gibson started the week 39th on the money list and needing to finish in the top-3 at the Portland Open to have a chance to climb inside the top-25 and punch an automatic ticket back to the main Tour.

A desperate 72nd hole eagle saw Gibson sign for a 2-under 69 on Sunday and a share of fourth place, ultimately moving up to 30th on the money list.

Only the top-25 are assured status on the PGA TOUR for 2017 but Gibson is in excellent position to claim one of the remaining 25 cards which will be handed out at the conclusion of the four tournament Finals Series on October 9.

He and Brett Drewitt, who finished T32 in Portland, are the only Australians to qualify for the Finals Series which is restricted to the top-75 money earners.

Drewitt secured 55th position with his play in Oregon to book his place, the Finals fields to be made up of 75 players from the Web.com Tour plus those finishing 126-200 on the PGA TOUR’S FedEx Cup points list.

Those 150 will play for 25 cards, their earnings at the end of the four weeks determining those who advance.

Victorian Steve Allan was on the cusp of joining Gibson and Drewitt at the start of the week, a desperate T9 finish two weeks ago vaulting him to 84th on the standings and a chance to play his way into the top-75.

An opening round 66 was encouraging but the former Australian Open champion faltered on day two with a costly 74 to slip down the leaderboard.

Shooting 67, 69 on the weekend saw Allan into T26 in the tournament but he only moved up to 81st on the money list.

While disappointed not to have a chance at a PGA TOUR card, Allan will be pleased not to be heading back to Q-School, the fate that awaits fellow Victorian Bryden Macpherson.

Macpherson started the week in 112th position on the money list and needed to get inside the top-100 to maintain playing rights for 2017.

He looked to be off to a flying start after opening with scores of 67, 68 to be inside the top-10 and projected to move to 91st on the money list and avoid the dreaded Q-School.

But a third round 77 sent the 2011 British Amateur champion tumbling down the leaderboard and he couldn’t recover Sunday.

He eventually finished T61 in the tournament and 114th on the money list.

Oliver Goss, Scott Gardiner and Peter Lonard all missed the cut, Goss keeping a 2017 card after finishing 95th on the money list while Scott Gardiner missed out finishing 148th.

Peter Lonard finished 147th on the money list but will be eligible for the Champions Tour in 2017 and was unlikely to continue on the Web.com even if he had qualified.
