New South Welshman Rhein Gibson proved once again today, at the Australian PGA Championship, that when he gets hot he goes low.
Starting his round with two bogeys in a row, Gibson refocused himself drawing inspiration from Rod Pampling’s final round at the Emirates Australian Open.
Gibson managed to recover with two birdies to be back to even for the day by the 4th hole at RACV Royal Pines Resort.
It was on the par-5 9th that his day really ignited, making an eagle he went on to shoot 9-under in 10 holes.
"I started bogey bogey to go to 9-over for the tournament and I really didn’t want to be here," said Gibson.
"I thought back to Pampling’s round on Sunday, he bogeyed the first and shot 10-under around The Aussie."
"I chipped in for eagle on 9, which was the turning point; it kind of gave me a sniff of making the cut, because that was really my main goal today, after playing so poorly yesterday."
His second round catapulted him up the leaderboard, from likely missing the cut, to being tied 5th after the morning field.
"It’s surreal, I played the last 10 holes, 8, 9-under, whatever I did, so that 9 holes got me back in the tournament," added Gibson.
"To be able to do that on a Friday to make the cut and get back in contention, it’s probably better than 55," said Gibson, who made waves around the world when he fired 55, the lowest ever round of golf.
In recent years Gibson has proven he is more than just a one hit wonder. He plied his trade on the OneAsia tour and played at home in the co-sanctioned PGA Tour of Australasia tournaments.
Then this year Gibson competed successfully on the Web.com Tour and graduated to the PGA TOUR where he has full status for the 2015/2016 season.
