After making consecutive cuts on his return from injury, Scott Gardiner will arrive at this week’s Rex Hospital Open on the Web.com Tour keen to build on some good momentum at a course where he has previously had success.
The 40-year-old was T2 here in 2014 and will be keen to draw on those good memories when he tees up Thursday fresh from a week’s break.
Gardiner struggled in his first three events back in 2016 but will be pleased with his progress after consistent golf in his last two starts.
He is one of 10 Australians teeing up this week in one of the longest running tournaments on the Web.com schedule.
The Rex Hospital Open was first played in 1994 but only one Australian has hoisted the trophy in that 22 year run, Mark Hensby in 2000.
Steve Allan, Greg Chalmers, Brett Drewitt, Rhein Gibson, Oliver Goss, Mathew Goggin, Peter Lonard, Bryden Macpherson and Cameron Percy will all be trying to change that when the gun goes off Thursday.
Gibson makes his second start of the year on the Web.com Tour after struggling to find his feet on the PGA TOUR in 2016.
As a graduate of the 2015 season Gibson has found it difficult to get any momentum at the top level and with several poor results has seen his exemption status slowly diminish.
While he missed the cut in his only previous appearance here last year the week presents a good opportunity to build some confidence as it looks unlikely he will keep his plying privileges on the PGA TOUR for 2017.
Also coming down from the PGA TOUR this week is Cameron Percy who makes his first start on the secondary tour for the season.
Percy has conditional status on the PGA TOUR this year and his playing opportunities have been limited with just even starts to date.
Greg Chalmers has had even less PGA TOUR starts than Percy with five and has struggled for the most part with just one made cut for the year.
However, he has two top-10 finishes in four starts on the Web.com Tour to be Australia’s highest placed player on the money list at 46.
The two-time Australian PGA champion will be aiming to keep that roll going and if he can work his way into the top -25 on the money list by year’s end will be headed back to the main tour next year.
Web.com regulars Oliver Goss, Bryden Macpherson, Steve Allan, Mathew Goggin and Brett Drewitt are all in the field this week as is Champions Tour hopeful Peter Lonard.
