Flitcroft shot a final round 8-over par (80) to edge 2016 Champion Robbie Hogan (74), Concord’s Jordan Widdicombe (71) and Terrey Hill’s Andrew Thompson (78) by one stroke on a three round total of 304 (+16).
The result hung in the balance throughout the final few holes with Jason Perkin and Andrew Thompson putting Flitcroft under pressure coming down the stretch.
“After four-putting the 16th green for a double bogey I wasn’t sure where things stood,” stated Flitcroft. A solid shot into the tricky 17th green made for a comfortable par and a one shot lead heading into the final hole.
Flitcroft was left with a 4 foot putt on the 18th green to seal the win.
“Standing over that final putt I was thinking to myself, it is easier to hole this than try and win in a playoff so I was relieved to see it drop.
“I had few expectations at the beginning of the week however when we were met with firm greens and strong winds during Round One I was excited by the challenge. I prefer conditions to be tough and enjoy thinking my way around golf courses.
"The Bungool layout definitely requires good course management and the swirling winds just made you second guess yourself a lot,” This attitude obviously helped Flitcroft finish on top on Friday afternoon.
A recent catch up with coach and PGA member, Dave Saunders helped Flitcroft iron out a few swing issues and find some confidence. “I have not played a lot this year and kind of lost my motivation to play golf for awhile. Dave helped get the rust out and re-energize things for me. I have to credit some of this win to Dave and the hard work he has put in with me over the years”.
2016 Champion, Robbie Hogan finished the tournament strongly with a 2-over par 74 to complete a commendable defense of his title. The round of the day was shot by Concord Trainee Professional Jordan Widdicombe with a 1 under par 71.
