A final round 64 was too little too late for Adam Scott to contend in Texas but the bogey-free final round at Colonial Country Club will be a confidence boost ahead of this week’s Memorial tournament and a final push for a U.S. Open berth.
Scott remains just outside the World Top-60 who will automatically earn entry to the year’s second major on June 11 but has a chance to remedy that at Muirfield Village this week.
If he doesn’t achieve that goal he will have to consider teeing up in qualifying the Monday after the Memorial and should that fail, he will have one final chance to qualify at the FedEx St Jude Classic the week before Shinnecock Hills.
The 6-under 64 jumped Scott more than 25 places up the leaderboard after a poor second round saw him make the cut on the number at 2-over.
He trod water in round three with a 1-over 71 but was back to much more recognisable form Sunday with matching nines of 3-under.
While still disappointed with his overall performance he will take some heart from his final round putting statistics where he gained strokes on the field on the greens.
Scott was one of three Australasians to play all four rounds at the Fort Worth Invitational, Danny Lee continuing his recent good play with a T14 finish after a final round 65 and John Senden making his first cut since returning to the TOUR in April.
Senden opened with rounds of 72-70 to qualify for the weekend on the number but couldn’t gain any momentum as he closed with 71-73 to be T77.
However, the FedEx Cup points gained are vital in his attempt to return to the TOUR as he plays the remainder of the year on a Family Crisis exemption as he attempts to earn back his card.
Aaron Baddeley, Rod Pampling and Cameron Smith were the other Australians to make the trip to Fort Worth but all finished several shots outside the qualifying mark for the weekend.
