Ben Eccles and Ryan McCarthy take advantage of one of the rare opportunities for Challenge Tour players to step up to the main tour at this week’s Made in Denmark Challenge.
Most of Europe’s top stars are in the US for the FedEx Cup playoffs and with exemption categories extended as a result, the pair will be in the field at the Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort.
With the inspiration of Jason Norris’ fairytale win in Fiji last week, and the spoils of victory which include a European Tour card, both players will be looking to emulate their fellow Australian.
A total of six Australians are in the field this week, Marcus Fraser and Nathan Holman making the short trip from last week’s Matchplay event in Germany to join Richard Green, Wade Ormsby, Eccles and McCarthy.
Fraser makes his debut at this tournament and brings good form after making the round of 16 at last week’s Matchplay event.
It has been an indifferent year for the likeable Victorian and he will be looking to take that head to head form into strokeplay as he tries to qualify for the Race to Dubai Finals.
Ormsby, too, showed off a rejuvenated game in Fiji and while he struggled in the final round will rightly feel good about the state of his game.
Playing 2017 on a medical exemption, Ormsby has shown flashes of good play but at 103rd in the Race to Dubai will be looking for a big finish to the year.
The South Australian has shown a liking for the tournament in the past with a final round 68 last year vaulting him more than 20 places up the leaderboard.
Richard Green, too, has good memories at Himmerland after finishing T6 here in 2015 though as he sits outside the top 200 on the Race to Dubai it appears he needs a win before season’s end if he is to regain his full playing rights.
