Geoff Drakeford has produced two stunning rounds on his way to a runner-up finish at the Challenge Tour’s Fred Olsen Challenge de Espana at the weekend.
Drakeford, who has limited starts on the secondary tour, jumped to 32nd on the money list after shooting 67-71-62-64 at the Tecina Golf course to be 20-under for the week and second outright.
The former standout amateur cashed a cheque for €17,600 to take his year’s earnings to €20,024 and is now in good position to push into the top-15 earners by year’s end and gain a full European Tour card.
Drakeford’s third round 62 vaulted him more than 30 places up the leader board and his final round 64 was good enough to finish just two shots behind eventual winner Rhys Davies of Wales.
The event was a low scoring affair with Drakeford’s 9-under round one of three shot for the week which also saw a 60 and a 61 at the course.
While a great result for the Victorian it could have easily been a victory but for a poor second round.
Drakeford made two double bogies on his way to a 71 on Thursday, the only player in the top-5 to have a score in the 70’s.
However, his brilliant comeback at the weekend is testament to the maturity of his game and attitude and he will gain another start next week courtesy of the top-10 finish.
